'That doesn't sound like something that I see in the Constitution,' Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) said when asked about national paid parental leave.
Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) claimed last week that laws to ensure paid parental leave are not within the federal government's constitutional purview. But six years ago, she backed then-presidential candidate Donald Trump's parental leave proposals.
During an appearance last Monday on KRMS, a conservative talk radio station in Missouri, a caller asked Hartzler about her previous support for legislation to provide paid leave for new parents.
"You were brought onstage, I believe during Donald Trump's administration, that you were helping some legislation to determine paid or some sort of maternity leave, for also I think fathers," the caller said. "You mentioned earlier there's only a few things the federal government should do. Is that one of those things?"

(18,639 posts)Hartzler opposes same-sex marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships.[38] She also opposes banning discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.[39] In 2019, Hartzler expressed her strong opposition to the Equality Act.[40] She has written an op-ed rejecting it.[41][42] She also opposes allowing transgender individuals to serve in the military.[39][43]
In 2019, Hartzler sponsored an event by proponents of conversion therapy in order to provide congressional office space, for which she was rebuked by Representative Ted Lieu, whose office was next to the event, and who sponsored legislation to ban conversion therapy.
Hartzler voted against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.[54]

(29,674 posts)She runs from any Democrats on the street, high school students, a specific house on a parade route, etc.
She refuses to do town halls because she can't handle them. She's held exactly 2 since she took office in 2010- in Sedalia and Warrensburg- and cut both short. Just an FYI-she campaigned against Ike Skelton claiming he refused to do town halls and was hiding from his constituents. He didn't do town halls because he was at every parade/festival/Homecoming/Civil War reenactment/major event, etc and was always easy to approach to ask about anything. I used to have a photo of him holding my daughter while I grilled him over entering Iraq while we were at the Battle of the Haybales.
Hartzler will not win the nomination and unless she drops soon she won't have a chance to run for her current seat.

(15,325 posts)She's not a fighter, she's a run & hider.
That's a big giveaway when they only speak from a prescripted message & won't show up for a debate, ya know.
Yikes.

(29,674 posts)Every two years the Democratic candidate will attempt to schedule one but she always has an excuse. Her supporters back her up all over social media, saying she's too busy to deal with something that's an obvious joke.

(2,636 posts)It's in the preamble...
We, the people of the united States of America, in order to form a more perfect union, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, *promote the general welfare,* ah-hand, secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
And of course I sang it.
It's in the general welfare to have people take care of and watch over children and tend to family when they are ill. The Republican party loves them some pregnant women out of the workforce, but does nothing to help them with the lives they insist these women carry. We can't be #1 if lots of other first world nations offer protections we do not.
