In WWII, when Hitler invaded Poland, the Russians were on the way to the Janow Podlaski Stud Farm in Poland, near the border with Russia, and the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Hitler had ordered priceless stallions and broodmares in all countries to be horse-napped, like other stolen fine art. They were being held in occupied Czechoslovakia.
A secret mission was organized between members of Patton's army, and a Nazi veterinarian, to save the horses. Not only to preserve them (some were Olympic champions), but to keep the Russians from getting there first. They knew the Russians would eat them, with no regard for their value.

When I was very young, I read this harrowing story first in the book, "And Miles to Go," about Witez II, a famed Arab stallion. I still have it.
Russians, in war, have little regard for life, either human or animal.
