Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsAfter getting a few "stink eyes" for being double masked in a store, I decided I'd better
plan a response if someone got vocal with their disapproval. This is it:
"Yeah---cough, cough---I know it looks silly but I just---cough, COUGH---tested positive and I want to---cough, cough, COUGH!--- pick up a few things while I can still get around."
They may not still be there to hear that last part!

But, i make hard eye contact the whole time. Seems to make the blowhards nervous.
Only happened 3 times during all of COVID, though. Not like it's a regular thing. Mask wearing was pretty solid around here.

(32,080 posts)Although, I would add "goddamn" or "fucking" between "own" and "business." I haven't had to say anything yet, although I've had a person or two snicker. I just ignore them, and pretend not to hear it.

Of course the Republicans may be the majority bit they tend to be poor and disabled so it simply maybe I am rarely in a place filled with republicans outside of the ones busking at the street corners.

(28,789 posts)I didn't notice it, but I have already planned my response to any asshole who may challenge my decision to remain masked in public:
"My body my choice."
I don't see how they argue with that.

I rarely look at other patrons of a store to see if theyre looking at me however.

Some here make it very obvious that they consider you a feeble-minded snowflake if you wear a mask. So far, none have said anything---maybe because I stare back at them.

I said in my best no-nonsense voice: "I'm fine."
He kept going out the door, saying quickly: "I know you are."
Make of that what you will.

(5,164 posts)Good response. I noticed the other day when I walked into a store wearing my duck bill n95 and I coughed that some people theyre seemed to sort of move away from me.
When I was in one store last night I am pretty sure that a young woman or her bf were laughing at me although I did not see it for sure. She was wearing shorts and sandals in 40- 50 degree weather. We have so many idiots here. Most of the people I see wearing masks lately seem to be Asian, Indian or Middle Eastern and people of color from islands or other countries. This is not a scientific survey obviously. There are still quite a few people working in the stores wearing masks but I would say they are in the minority.
I used to get people laughing at me all the time when I was wearing my Kn95 and my goggles for like the first 3/4 of the pandemic probably. I should go back to wearing the goggles now and see what reaction I get but its just too hard physically. 😹 I have been thinking about getting prescription protective glasses for protection which I was thinking about anyway for things like outside gardening where I need to protect my eyes. Its hard for me to wear protective goggles over my glasses since everything fogs up and I cant see very well, in addition my glasses tend to fall off somehow when wearing them alone.

(1,495 posts)Some of it by my left ear is still visible, even with a mask though. I've had psoriasis for almost 20 years, but it was never on my face. I got a bad flare up from my Pfizer vaccines and now it's on my face. I'm afraid to get anymore doses so I'm going to be wearing a mask forever probably. Not just to hide the psoriasis, but because I'm scared of Covid!

(24,149 posts)Wayyy back in the days of dance 'clubs' (no actual memberships, just 'discos'), a girlfriend distributed fancy business-sized cards that read, "Yes I do, But not with you." (I came across one recently going through an old box of memorabilia and snapped a pic, if anyone is interested.)
Maybe because nobody could hear what anybody else was saying anyway, it was an easy way to reply to "D'ya wanna dance?" Or, "So ya wanna (fill in the blank)."
What if there were a card for:
"Your choice not to wear a mask exercised your American Freedom! My American concern for fellow citizens compels me to notify you that you may have been exposed to viral infection. Chances are you will be fine, and there is no specific need to consult government sources or healthcare providers; however, you might want to self-monitor for symptoms."

(1,816 posts)My mother used to lower her chin and give you the stare.
You knew you were in trouble when she did this.
It works very well with a mask. The eyes convey everything.
When confronted, I give the stare.
And then I ask, " do I know you?"
One guy kept going on about masks.
So I repeated my question.
And he said "no" but...
So I just said, " so why do I care what you think?"
And walk away.
It worked.
I did practice ahead of time. My cat thought I was crazy.

(2,019 posts)Like 5 or 6 over a k95. When they do that, fake a sneeze, pull a paper mask off and wipe your hands with it, then present your hand as if to shake theirs when saying "do I know you?" and watch the look on their faces. I've done it several times, freakin; priceless.
