(2,955 posts)There are people who still don't realize that democracy is under attack worldwide. If Russia succeeds at taking Ukraine, it will serve as an example for other authoritarian regimes. Who will be next if Ukraine falls?

Yes the autocrats of the world hate democracy.

( I cant find the exact thread at this time on my little phone)
I disagree. The time to say genocide or any comparison to the Holocaust is before it happens again or while it is happening.

(32,852 posts)It cant happen again. Unless you have nukes.

(16,095 posts)That's the answer right there.
Even if people quibble with the word choice, what is happening is wrong, but according to some, it's cool because Putin threatens that he will use nuclear weapons.
So, when he attacks a NATO country, will he suddenly not have them anymore?
Fiendish Thingy
(15,601 posts)Better question: when Putin attacks NATO, will the fear of his nukes that currently prevents NATO from defending Ukraine suddenly go away?
The people of Latvia really want to know the answer; signs arent looking good
Bettie
(16,095 posts)because he will come back for another bite, once he's sure that NATO won't act as long as he keeps threatening.

(13,975 posts)Im certainly not. I trust Biden and other world leaders to make decisions that wont put the world at risk for Armageddon.

(16,095 posts)Putin to take European countries with impunity, since we're across an ocean from him.

(13,975 posts)But the response must be measured. Were dealing with a country that has a couple of thousand nukes that could send the world into a nuclear winter where billions would die. Ukraine is getting and will continue to get material support from the West. Im not going to call for American mothers to sacrifice their sons for this war.

(15,601 posts)The west must fight Putin, now in Ukraine on their terms, or soon in a place and time and terms of Putins choosing.
Putin is only successful (that is, remains in power) as long as the west remains afraid of him using nukes. Once the west overcomes that fear, and wagers that enough Russians in the nuclear chain of command will refuse to carry out Putins orders to launch nuclear strikes, only then will Putins genocide be stopped. If The Russians love their children as much as everyone else does, Putins order to start WWIII will not be obeyed. If the west is too cowardly to take the risk, then we still get a slow motion WWIII, maybe without nuclear war, but with plenty of death and suffering.
If cowardice wins, prepare to sacrifice the children of the Baltics, perhaps Poland, Slovakia and other countries Putin will seize if he is not stopped in Ukraine. The west doesnt have the stomach nor stamina to sustain sanctions for much longer (Hungary, Italy and Germany are already balking at extending/increasing sanctions), and dictators around the world are watching with great interest to see the next steps the west takes.
The fear that Putin might use nuclear weapons will not swiftly evaporate if the mythical, magical Article Five is invoked by an invaded NATO nation. No, if the wests fear of WWIII is not overcome now, with Ukraine, then Putin will seize the Baltics with as much ease as Hitler took the Sudetenland. If Trump is reinstalled in the White House, he may even give Putin written permission to do so, just like Neville Chamberlain did with Hitler.
The choice isnt whether or not to fight Putin, only where and when.
The world will have to face Putins threat of Armageddon, stare it unflinchingly in the face, and see if humanity prevails in avoiding WWIII.
As long as Putin remains in power, it cannot be avoided, only delayed for a little while.

(3,858 posts)Is not the targeting of key individuals and it is not the targeting of civilians. I personally know people who escaped genocide, I am related to hundreds who did not.
There are plenty of horrible monikers for Putin and his terrible crimes. Every terrible war is not genocide.
