(34,066 posts)stay on our medical plan - without enrolling in school full time, only to crash and burn partway through each semester.
Her only other option for insurance (to cover her $200,000+ billed medical costs each and every year) was Ohio's open enrollment option - which cost about $20,000/year (and would still have left her with massive out-of-pocket costs until she met the cap for the year).
She still hasn't been able to finish college (her disease impacted her mental stamina), but she has been able to hold down part or full time employment since her last attempt, and has never been without insurance. This year (at age 31) she is buying her first home - something which is still a stretch - but which would never have been possible with the threat of medical bankruptcy never far away before the ACA.
I don't know how much influence I had, but some of the changes to the original version were nearly identical to the changes which I suggested would be critical for someone in my daughter's circumstances.
