'I am on the side of Russia': Chess champion banned for supporting Ukraine invasion

Russian chess champion Sergey Karjakin is banned from competing for at least the next six months after publicly supporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The International Chess Federation announced the ban Monday after finding Karjakin guilty of breaching a code of ethics clause.

"The statements by Sergey Karjakin on the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine has led to a considerable number of reactions on social media and elsewhere, to a large extent negative towards the opinions expressed by Sergey Karjakin,” a statement from FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission said.

Karjakin, who once held the title of youngest-ever grandmaster at 12, was born in Crimea and represented Ukraine until 2009.
