Madeleine Albright, the first woman US secretary of state, has died. She was 84
---
WASHINGTON Madeleine Albright, the first woman to serve as U.S. Secretary of State, has died at 84, her family said Wednesday.
The family said Albright died of cancer and was surrounded by her friends and family when she passed away.
"We have lost a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend," the family wrote in a statement.
President Bill Clinton chose Albright as Americas top diplomat in 1996, and she served in that capacity for the last four years of the Clinton administration.
At the time, she was the highest-ranking woman in the history of U.S. government. She was not in the line of succession for the presidency, however, because she was a native of Czechoslovakia.

(27,058 posts)She was known for her large, colorful, and beautiful brooches.
A portion of her collection came here to Phoenix as an art exhibition.
It was one of my most favorite art shows, ever.
Each brooch came with an anecdote written by her about where it came from, or who gave it to her, what it symbolized to her, and why she chose to wear it on certain occasions. The stories were not only fascinating, but showed her wit and intelligence.
What a great lady!

(4,925 posts)I treasure the time I was able to see her speak at a company convention. It was not long after Bush launched into Iraq. I remember when she said it was not unpatriotic but a duty to be critical of the President. Many in attendance, including me were clapping at that statement.
