KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) Afghanistans Taliban rulers unexpectedly decided against reopening schools Wednesday to girls above the sixth grade, reneging on a promise and opting to appease their hard-line base at the expense of further alienating the international community.
The surprising decision, confirmed by a Taliban official, is bound to disrupt efforts by the Taliban to win recognition from potential international donors at a time when the country is mired in a worsening humanitarian crisis. The international community has urged Taliban leaders to reopen schools and give women their right to public space.
The reversal was so sudden that the Education Ministry was caught off guard on Wednesday, the start of the school year, as were schools in parts of the Afghan capital of Kabul and elsewhere in the country. Some girls in higher grades returned to schools, only to be told to go home.
Aid organizations said the move exacerbated the uncertainty surrounding Afghanistans future as the Taliban leadership seems to struggle to get on the same page as it shifts from fighting to governing.

No one thought they were going to allow women and girls to be educated.
But, now it will be blamed on Biden even though it was TFG's plan.

(11,446 posts)Those questions put to the SCOTUS nominee yesterday about rating her faith and other shocking provocations about when life starts, etc. tell me that the deliberate line between Church and State has been stomped down. I wish those indoctrinated right-wing 'Christian' women would wake the f*ck up.
Nothing worse to these racist, women hating, pontificating ass-wipes than a woman--a black one at that, in a position of power. Best not stop at pulling books from libraries, cheating people from fair voting, pushing the revisionist narrative that our country was founded on 'Judaeo-Christian values', and forcing women back under the authority of men...What's next?
Halting girls from achieving a proper education. That's what.
