(33,915 posts)Unfortunately, he has fallen into that trap. I wish he would stop, and start acting like a leader as to public health.

If they thought he should wear a mask then he would have.

(33,915 posts)to minimize the chances of getting immediate severe consequences.
It is absolutely not clear on whether COVID (even mild, even in the vaccinated) causes long term consequences. What science there is suggests caution - long-term heart damage (even from mild cases) and brain damage have now been documented. We are in the very early stages of learning how much long-term damage COVID causes. With a disease that is as deadly, as communicable, and which impacts more body systems than pretty much any doctor has seen, it is assinine to pretend a mild case is no worse than a common cold, long term. Especially when simple precautions are available to minimize the risk of catching it - like wearing a mask.

(33,915 posts)We have precisely 2 years of data on the long term consequences of COVID. What we do know, from early studies is that **even in mild cases** **even in vaccinated individuals** it can cause long-term heart damage. The studies on brain damage are too recent to know if they are persistent.
This disease impacts more body systems than doctors have previously seen. It will be decades before we know the full public health impact of pretending this is no more severe, or lasting, than the flu.
Until then, people who truly follow siience will continue to try to avoid disease by taking simple steps such as masking. The CDC's most recent change in guidance was timed to avoid a political spectacle at the state of the union address. Treating a health matter as political is not science.
