What was she thinking during that seven second pause?

Republicans turn Ketanji Brown Jackson hearing into a political circus

Ted Cruz, the Republican senator from Texas, turned theatrically to an outsized blow-up of a children’s book, Antiracist Baby by Ibram X Kendi. Pointing to a cartoon from its pages of an infant in diapers taking their first walk, he asked Jackson: “Do you agree with this book … that babies are racist?”

“Senator,” Jackson began with a sigh. And then she paused for seven full seconds, which in the august setting of the Senate judiciary committee hearing felt like a year...

“I have not reviewed any of those books,” she said. “They don’t come up in my work as a judge, which I’m respectfully here to address.”

This is a tactic Ben Shapiro uses to make people make misstatements. The best way to diffuse that is to slow the pacing down and don't the the other try this manipulation tactic.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gish_gallop

The Gish gallop is a rhetorical technique in which a person in a debate attempts to overwhelm their opponent by providing an excessive number of arguments with no regard for the accuracy or strength of those arguments. The term was coined in 1994 by anthropologist Eugenie Scott, who named it after American creationist Duane Gish and argued that Gish used the technique frequently when challenging the scientific fact of evolution.[1][2] It is similar to another debating method called spreading, in which one person speaks extremely fast in an attempt to cause their opponent to fail to respond to all the arguments that have been raised.

During a Gish gallop, a debater confronts an opponent with a rapid series of many specious arguments, half-truths, misrepresentations, and outright lies in a short space of time, which makes it impossible for the opponent to refute all of them within the format of a formal debate.[3][4] Each point raised by the Gish galloper takes considerably more time to refute or fact-check than it did to state in the first place, which is known online as Brandolini's law.[5] The technique wastes an opponent's time and may cast doubt on the opponent's debating ability for an audience unfamiliar with the technique, especially if no independent fact-checking is involved or if the audience has limited knowledge of the topics.[6]

Generally, it is more difficult to use the Gish gallop in a structured debate than a free-form one.[7] If a debater is familiar with an opponent who is known to use the Gish gallop, the technique may be countered by pre-empting and refuting the opponent's commonly used arguments before the opponent has an opportunity to launch into a Gish gallop.[8]

That she can suffer the slings and arrows from these GQP reptilian zombies without snapping their heads off and shitting down their necks is far beyond my capability, and the vast majority of others.

She's as level headed as they come, and makes "I like beer" Kavanagh look like a petulant five year old.

If republicans can manage to affirm ACB and Beer Boy, they should have no qualms about Ms.Jackson. She makes both of them look ridiculous.

and substitute how she could or should have answered these Repug Senator's questions - instead of the well-mannered, poised and professional way she did answer their questions.

We were all thinking how we'd respond to those jerks. Just think of what must have been going through her mind as she remained poised and professional.

in anger, leave a considerable space of silence because it causes most people to hear themselves and how they said it. Then to respond calmly takes them off their performance.
Was taught this when I worked at a department store "billing adjustments."

It's got really clunky rhyming... but it says things like this:

"Babies are taught to be racist or antiracist - there's no neutrality. Take these nine steps to make equity a reality.

1 Open your eyes to all skin colors
Antiracist Baby learns all the colors,
not because race is true.
If you claim to be color-blind,
you deny what's right in front of you.

2 Use your words to talk about race
No one will see racism if we only stay silent.
If we don't name racism,
it won't stop being so violent."

etc...

The book title "Antiracist Baby" does not imply that there is such a thing as a "Racist Baby." It implies that babies can begin learning to oppose racism. This is the sort of mistake these rightwing zealots make constantly. They fail to think things through logically.

He's playing to the GQP base. They love this and Cruz may have even raised his approval from them a point or two. He'd still be the last person they ever chose as a presidential candidate though. 🙄
