Outrage as high school students call for bombing to kill all Native Americans in their community: report
?id=29590642&width=1000&height=562
There is outrage at two schools in the Duluth area of Minnesota after Native American students associated with a nearby Reservation faced death threats from fellow students.
"The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is demanding a response from leaders of nearby school districts after a racist and threatening Snapchat conversation between two students was shared on social media late last week," the Star Tribune reports. "The exchange between a student from Esko High School and another from Cloquet High included a desire for the Cloquet school to be bombed so 'all natives die.' It continued with other derogatory remarks about Native American people."
The letter from the Reservation Business Committee was addressed to Cloquet Superintendent Michael Cary and Esko Superintendent Aaron Fisher.

What is the final "solution" in their twisted minds?
I no longer recite any pledge to a country of bigots!

(50,957 posts)The why likely starts at home.
I have no idea how hate and ignorance can thrive like it does, given all the access 'we' have to truth.

the murder of this or that ethnic group. Second, give these ignorant students detention
in jail until they can intelligently discuss the difference between "Native" and "Indigenous"
peoples. (Everyone born in The Americas is a "Native" while the original inhabitants of
any land are "Indigenous or Aboriginal".) There's no reason we have to tolerate this level
of stupidity and ignorance here in 2022 AD.

(1,232 posts)What is frightening is that Duluth of all places should know better. For the most part.
The many disappearances and violence committed upon Indigenous in the northern tier of this State and into Canada is unacceptable.
Racism is rampant in MN. and with the many Tribes we have it is stunning that this continues to happen. Yet I know most people have neither seen nor ever spoken to anyone in those communities. I am married to an enrollee and this report makes me really upset.

(10,378 posts)I moved to South Dakota in the early 80's, lived there for two years.
I was shocked at the prejudice and bigotry against Native Americans. It was far worse than the prejudice and bigotry against black people that existed in the small-town rural area I moved from.
Sounds like nothing has changed.

Kids. Honestly. Kids say stuff. Let's see if this is part of something larger, organized, and grown-up.

(53,003 posts)These are high school students. High school students are capable of taking automatic rifles to school and shooting their classmates. Of course, they are capable of blowing up people and places. Playing down this sort of thing with antiquated notions of childhood is a very dangerous practice.

(11,095 posts)I'm not saying ignore it (which you really can't do these days) - but maybe it ought to first be determined if this represents a legitimate threat of violence - or a couple of 16 year olds jawing at one another. Maybe we're being a little premature with the "lock em up" stuff?
Anybody know what the beef was about to start with?

(101,154 posts)so I think asking DU to take a step back is not "Whitesplaining". In this thread, we've seen calls for the students to be locked up for several years. The Font du Lac Band is just asking for the school districts and leadership to act because of the racism, not the police or court systems to press charges about intended violence:
"We want to receive an immediate response from the school districts and school leadership on how you intend to address this situation, not only with the specific students involved in the incident but also with the larger student body community."
...
She said she wants the involved students to apologize to the Native community, and for school leaders to do more, including requiring curriculum that would educate students about Native American oppression and genocide.
...
She said Cloquet school leaders "made remarks over the loudspeaker and put an e-mail out. But they're not being transparent about the actions they took with the students or what they will do to prevent this in the future. Our community deserves to know the outcome."

(110,913 posts)What needs to be done is convincing them that sending anonymous death threats to anybody is wrong. A hefty fine to be worked off at minimum wage in strenuous community service projects with a side of threatening them and their parents with CPS intervention if they try to skip it might eventually get through to them as they grow up a little more.
If not, they'll be the kind of assholes who end up in jail, anyway.
Mostly, what these high school thugs need is time. Making that time productive while making them too tired to hang with their buddies in that little bigot bubble is a good plan.

(3,171 posts)Precisely what words did they use? No doubt some here would (and possibly will) respond with, "Who cares?! They should be locked up!" We should all care because the knee-jerk reaction to speech we dislike, disagree with, or even abhor should not and must not be to lock up the person doing the talking.
If they were discussing a serious plot to bomb the school in order to kill Native American students (e.g., "you go buy the supplies we need, I looked them up online, then I'll meet you tomorrow to build the bombs" , then that's illegal on a couple levels. Investigate, gather evidence, bring appropriate charges, and they get their day in court.
If, on the other hand, two teenagers were yapping at each other and one said, "Man, I really hate those Native American students. I wish someone would blow them all up with a bomb" that's protected speech. It's abhorrent and reprehensible speech beyond a doubt, but it is protected under the First Amendment. They have the right to say abhorrent and reprehensible things as long as they don't cross a very specifically defined line. They have the right to hold abhorrent and reprehensible opinions.
Sympthsical
(8,936 posts)Because the initial characterization sounds like two students talking shit to each other over Snapchat, and someone leaked it? Who? Was this a third party?
I guess my question is, did one the students post it himself? Because "received death threats" is a lot different than "private conversation leaked." If someone said they should be bombed in public, we're dealing with something different.
And, in a nation of 330 million, I'm not sure two teenaged shitheads being racist assholes privately is headline news.
"Lock them up" is just Some people really are just full on authoritarian these days.
Obviously parents and school officials need to get together and do something here. But Jesus is this story something. A conversation between two asshole kids? This is my outrage of the day?
If everything I said privately as a teenager was in writing and shown to the world, I would've never been employed.
