(2,267 posts)Youd never get 17* Greed Over People bastards to vote for a conviction in the Senate. And thats assuming articles of impeachment were drawn up right this minute.
*ETA: Youd need 17 to get the 2/3 majority thats required since the Senate is 50/50. Kamala Harris would preside since its not a trial of the president of the US.
I love your optimism!

If he did accept, the Senate Republicans on the committee would not treat him any different than they did Judge Jackson.

(50,453 posts)Thanks to McConnell and Trump, we have a 6-3 RW court. When KBJ is seated it'll still be 6-3 because Breyer is one of the 3.
If Thomas croaks, resigns or is cast out, we'll have a 5-4 RW court.
Now...if we could somehow convince Kavanaugh his life would be better if he were to become an ambulance chaser or something, THAT would change the balance of the Court. And as Marius pointed out, McConnell would go apeshit.
Having said that, who do we have that's good?

(9,998 posts)I'm not saying he won't die in the coming days, but it's certainly as likely that he'll be back on the court by next week or next month, doing his best to destroy Democracy.
I'll wait to hear that he's truly in bad shape before jumping for joy. Like TFG with Covid, he's getting the Best possible care. The kind that people like us can only dream about. If he's saveable, they'll save him.
At the very least, I hope his life is truly in danger, and that he is suffering.

(9,998 posts)DOJ hardly appears to be going after suspects far more involved in the committing of Treason, so I doubt they raise an eyebrow about her. She's protected because of who her hubby is.
Now Clarence dying, that's a whole 'nother story. Biden would be in a position to get someone appointed prior to November, and even though we'd still be down 5 votes to 4, at least it would be back to how it was when RBG was still alive.

(7,410 posts)There seems to be a nondistinguishable "flow" of something or other in that direction. Maybe it's community group-think that looks like something else.
Thomas is having real problems. Looks like his true character is finally emerging. Staying in relative obscurity was likely his best strategy. Trump drew him out. ETTD.
Trump has always appealed to humanity's darker side. Reduced to the least common denominator, there is no respect for human life. Putin is the same way. Autocrats can only be that way.
An autocrat is the dominant source of money for oligarchs. That's a compact between them. That's why autocrats survive.

(20,365 posts)Hey. President Taft became a justice of the Supreme Court.
onenote
(42,383 posts)Before he was president, he was solicitor general and then a federal judge. After he was president he taught law school full time for eight years at Yale and authored a book about the Supreme Court. Most importantly, Taft, having served as president, made it clear that he would only accept an appointment to the Court if it was to be Chief Justice.
Obama never served as a judge. Never argued a case in the Supreme Court. Worked on relatively few cases during his limited time as a law firm associate. And his role as a "professor" of Constitutional Law was that of a part-time, non-tenured track lecturer.

1. Thomas is either ill, or faking it. Either way, it's bad news for R's.
2. Thomas may use his reported illness as a face-saving way to leave, rather than be impeached or remain constantly in the news as a lightning rod, possibly swaying elections. Some Republicans might actually want him gone.
3. If he does resign or, um, whatever, Biden should nominate another Black woman. RBG wanted to see 9 women on the court - I'll go her one further and say 9 women of color.
malaise

(1,607 posts)Additional thought:
When Antonin Scalia died, Republicans used that to help fire up their base. They could do the same thing if Thomas retires just before the 2024 election. Most R's would probably prefer that he drag things out until then, although some might worry that him staying would help fire up Dems in the midterms. Me, I'll just be happy when he's gone... no matter when it happens.
