U.S. announces charges against Russians in global hacking campaigns
The Justice Department announced Thursday that four Russian nationals working for the Russian government have been previously indicted for two separate incidents of attempted hacking into energy facilities in the U.S. and abroad between 2012 and 2018, targeting hundreds of companies and organizations in some 135 countries.
Justice Department officials said in a press release that one of the campaigns, if successful, would have given Russia the ability to disrupt energy sector computer systems "at a future time of its choosing," resulting in "potentially catastrophic" damage to critical infrastructure.
A Justice Department official told reporters that these charges were unsealed because "they do a good job of highlighting the kind of thing that we are concerned about in the current environment."
The official said "they're very good examples of the dark art of the possible."

(23,862 posts)This would be a game changer if "one campaign" was indeed giving Putin info on energy sector computer defense secrets. I wonder if the latest Trump plan to sue Hillary is motivated by this news?

(7,410 posts)How can anyone be so numbskulled? Suing Clinton means depositions and "Discovery." So someone will eventually come around to telling Trump that he's an idiot to pursue this lawsuit. That hasn't happened yet. "Why not" is another topic for a future book written by someone who's done one or two of them already. Anyway, while the DOJ "appears" to be asleep at the wheel, I don't know if anything coming close to sedition will ever hit the docket. Trump could probably just televise himself handing over code to a Russian agent and no one would bat an eye. You know it's TV. Art can imitate TV just as TV can imitate art. And propagandists can make real action look like entertainment, right? Do we, on a subliminal level, have clear lines drawn between TV fantasy and reality? Or is it getting fuzzier with more sophisticated levels of marketing?
Yeah. I know. Time for a nap.

(23,862 posts)But seriously, if this wasn't a CBS tweet, I'd be discounting. Why the ambiguous "one campaign" from the DOJ. There were only 2 campaigns. Hillary and Trump. Which one and why use such indirect language to make the statement?
Very odd wording, but the poit seems to be that 1 Campaign committed a treasonable act. And I really can't think of a reason why Hillary would condone this. That only leaves 1 other campaign.....

The only network the control system a true LAN with no connection off-site. No WAN, no internet.
If you're not on site, there's no access.
Many chemical plants & refineries already do this.
