Leaked Email: Restaurant Chain Exec's Plan to Hire Workers for Less Because Inflation, Gas Prices...

...Will Make Them Desperate

An executive who manages a chain of Applebees restaurants celebrated how high gas prices and inflation might burden lower wage workers in a recent leaked email.

In an internal email from a company called Apple Central LLC, executive director of operations Wayne Pankratz explained Applebee’s locations could capitalize on high prices by paying workers less.

Pankratz wrote,

Most of our employee base and potential employee base live paycheck to paycheck. Any increase in gas price cuts into their disposable income. As inflation continues to climb and gas prices continue to go up, that means more hours employees will need to work to maintain their current level of living. We are no longer competing with the government when it comes to hiring.

The executive added that stimulus money is “no more,” while supplemental unemployment benefits have also dried up.

It is completely nonsensical and reads more like a talking points memo than an actual corporate strategy.

The extra unemployment stimulus ran out months ago

Inflation makes people LESS likely to eat out, which hurts their business

Unemployment claims at something like a sixty year low, so it’s not like there are millions of people sitting home because they don’t want to work at Applebee’s. If I was an exec at that company I’d be very worried about a coworker who seems to have no clue about that status of the economy or what is good for our company.

Less disposable income, means fewer outings to mid chain mediocre restaurants. Fewer customers leads to fewer tips leads to fewer employees which will find better opportunities elsewhere and NEVER return to the crappy treatment of employees at places like Applebees.

The wealthiest can afford the price increases and wouldn't be caught dead at a working class family friendly Applebees.
