Texas demands drug companies turn over documents on 'puberty blocking' drugs for children

Reuters) - The Texas attorney general on Thursday ordered drugmakers Abbvie Inc and Endo International to turn over materials related to the sale of puberty blockers to children who believe they are transgender, part of an investigation into their off-label use.

The demand comes during a growing controversy over the use of medication given to halt the development of puberty and secondary sex characteristics in children as young as 8 who have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria. Transgender issues and treatments have increasingly become part of a national debate in America.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has said he is investigating whether pharmaceutical companies are promoting hormone therapies such as Supprelin LA and Lupron to children and their parents without disclosing potential long-term effects.

"I will not allow Big Pharma to misleadingly promote these drugs that may pose a high risk of serious physical and psychological damage to Texas children who cannot yet fathom  or consent to the potential long-term effects of such use," Paxton said in a statement.

Nice framing Reuters (original source for the MSN story). But what if the child's belief is a deeply held religious belief? Conservatives love to give bigots and oppressors a pass because of their deeply held religious beliefs. Why shouldn't that work for these children, too?

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is investigating two pharmaceutical companies — Endo Pharmaceuticals and AbbVie Inc. — for allegedly advertising puberty blockers to children and their parents to treat gender dysphoria rather than the other medical conditions they are approved to treat.

Paxton opened the investigation in December and filed civil investigative demands with the two companies on Thursday.

This is the latest move in an ongoing effort by Paxton and Gov. Greg Abbott to limit access to gender-affirming medical care for transgender teens in Texas.

Gender-affirming care is a treatment model to address gender dysphoria, the distress a person feels when their gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned at birth. Young people often focus on social transition — dressing a certain way or using different pronouns — but can be prescribed puberty blockers or hormone therapy in consultation with a doctor.

whatever their rationale for "looking out for the health and safety of our kids," this is just persecution based on religious conservatives' insistence on controlling other peoples' behavior and lifestyles...and this is this kind of thing the GOP wants for all of the U.S.; I suppose they consider their extremist religious views to be inviolable and unquestionable, and therefore their attempts to force society to conform to their religious codes to be righteous and correct, as they are just trying to save everyone from going to Hell or something. If only there was some kind of rule that church and state should be separate or something; somebody ought to come up with something like that.

I'm not against the Penn state swimmer however she only transitioned a couple years ago after already going to the growth spurts and the muscle building and everything else.

It's funny how laws like this make something like what's happening now even more likely which they can't stand. Hell even I have issues with equity for the other competitors but if somebody transitioned before puberty there's no argument for me. And I doubt any other arguments would gain traction.

This country is counterintuitive.

Is that the process? Can an AG simply order the release of records w/o a subpoena? Doesn't there need to be some evidence of wrong-doing before you just order the release of internal documentation?

My guess is that the companies are complying because they have nothing to hide, but I am concerned about what kind of precedent this sets.
