(8,914 posts)The driver is in the right lane and approaching the cars in the lane immediately to the left, with the cars in the right lane way ahead.
In Europe, you're only allowed to pass cars to their left.
So instead of staying in the right lane and passing the cars in the left lane, the driver changes lanes to the far left lane to pass.
In the US, every driver would have stayed in the right lane and just pass the cars.
In some areas in Europe, each lane has it's own speed limit, with the slower limits to the right and the faster limits to the left.

(30,613 posts)"The fast lane" refers to the left lane. We don't have legislated speed limits per lane, but we are supposed to pass on the left.
But Americans are assholes and scofflaws.

(8,914 posts)And yes I know here you pass on the left as well.
But here if the Highway Patrol is behind you and you pass on the right, they won't pull you over. In Europe they will.
And at every state that I've driven in, wherever the Interstate freeway has more than 2 lanes, everyone passes in whatever lane they are in, regardless if they're in the left or right lane of the car they're passing.
I only see the left passing lane respected on 2 lane roads, and only if everyone driving slower are in the left lane.

(7,294 posts)doesn't the camerman car pass a car that is left of it? Are you saying that they could've been pulled over for that?

(8,914 posts)You can't pass on the right for any reason.
You will get a ticket if your caught.

(8,914 posts)If you're on a multi-lane road and a car next to you is 1 inch (2.5 cm in Europe) ahead of you and they turn on their turning signal to change lanes into your lane, you have to slow down to let them in.
If you speed up and that car has to get in behind you and a police officer see's it, you will get a ticket.

(7,294 posts)and the other car speeds up, which one does the cop pull over?

(7,281 posts)I haven't traveled out of country, but yes here those scenarios seems to be true here.
I think by and large people pass on the left, passing the right happens but is generally less often than the opposite.
Personally I don't like passing on the right, but often it can't be avoided. Plus our on and off ramps are generally designed on the right.
obviously, there are many exceptions.
