A team of scientists have said they have developed an oral male contraceptive that is 99% effective in mice without causing side effects, and could enter human trials by the end of this year.
The findings will be presented at the American Chemical Society's spring meeting, and mark a key step towards expanding birth control options - as well as responsibilities - for men.
Ever since the female birth control pill was first approved in the 1960s, researchers have been interested in a male equivalent, Md Abdullah Al Noman, a graduate student at the University of Minnesota who will present the work, told AFP.
"Multiple studies showed that men are interested in sharing the responsibility of birth control with their partners," he said - but until now, there have been only two effective options available: condoms or vasectomies.

(50,949 posts)what happens with a fetus or a child. There are even rape victims who, due to some states' republican legislation, must allow the fathers of their children - the rapists - access to those children.
This should - but won't - end that. If a man does not want a woman to have a child or an abortion, he can avail himself of this. Prevent the pregnancy or shut up.
But, really, men have always had the ability to condom up and prevent the pregnancy - or simply abstain - and have chosen not to, and some still feel like they get to decide what happens with the resulting pregnancy. So this probably won't change that.

(146,307 posts)One of the issues, of course, is trust. Guy says, "Don't worry, baby, I'm on the pill." Is he? How does one know?
The key issue is that it's not the man who gets pregnant. So, there's that. I wouldn't trust many men's word on this.

(4,552 posts)Can't happen? Yes it can. Can't happen is exactly what we said about abortion 10 years ago.
A growing number of republicans and the Catholic Church want birth control outlawed.
Wonder how repukes will enforce pull out?
Does the American Chemical Society receive government funding?

However, far-right Republicans are against any form of contraception! The religious right-wingers are against contraception because they think preventing contraception is going against the will of God.
The Republican politicians, on the other hand, are against contraception because access to contraception means fewer unwanted pregnancies, which means fewer abortions, which means taking away their number-one, most-effective, red-meat, single-voter issue with which to bludgeon Democratic candidates (and Supreme Court Justice candidates, apparently).
