General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI have always been disgusted by the media's bothsiderism but...
today I happened to catch Bod Woodward on morning Joe taking it to another level. He kept insisting that the left is equally responsible for the right wingers war on democracy saying that it rests on Biden's shoulders to turn the temperature down. He was chastised numerous times by the other guests and hosts but wouldn't give up on his talking point. He was given ample opportunity to clarify what he was saying but he even went so far as to compare what meadows, ginni T. and the rest of them were doing after the election to the way Democrats operate. This nonsense is expected over there at fox but the MSM has got to start doing better, it has been going on way too long and if they don't stop with the false equivalence I see no hope for the future.

(21,312 posts)The 3 cable news networks push the same right wing narratives. This is the only difference;
Fox News says Obama beats his wife.
CNN says it needs more information.
MSNBC says no he doesn't.
All 3 are still talking about Obama beating his wife.
I am down to 2 people who I watch on cable; Nicolle and Chris. Sad that Rachel axed Keith, I would have watched 3.
You can tell what the major right wing narratives are by simply flipping channels and they will all be talking about the same thing, usually at the same time.
One of the major right wing talking points right now is that president Biden is weak, he isn't doing enough in Ukraine. This will be a GQP talking point for the next election. This is pretty ironic coming from the Putin Party. (GQP)

(17,205 posts)Have both praised Biden for leading the charge against Putler & helping Ukraine. But the GQP & FQX will
point out that one day one Ukrainian solider somewhere ran out of .308 armor piercing bullets and it's all
Biden's fault, and FQX viewers will eat it up and ignore the fact that the soldier gets a 1000 rounds of these
every day and uses them up every day.

(1,654 posts)His writing has less of it, but anytime he is talking on TV one on one or in a group discussion, he always both sides it. That's the way he thinks. He does it with that super serious unctious way of making pronouncements. Beyond Watergate look at his background. He was always the one with the Republican government connections. He has always been the serious journalist member of the "ruling class."

(58,785 posts)than in the past. That's really important.
Woodward and many others, hosts and guests, have been doing this each election now. That's the takeaway, not the show of disagreement while he and many others work at deceiving and demoralizing the left into not voting.
A lie told once remains a lie but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth. ~ Joseph Goebbels (In 2016, how many times did we hear 1000 variations on, "Anyway, the Democrats do it too"?, and how many thousands of times did the MSM repeat it?)

(145,130 posts)Woodward was wrong when he claimed that anti-democratic impulses are a problem among both the right and left. Morning Joe and Eugene Robinson called Woodward out on this bullshit.

Woodward was discussing the texts between right-wing activist Ginni Thomas and Donald Trump's chief of staff Mark Meadows. The Washington Post reporter and his co-author Robert Costa obtained the texts discussing plans to overturn Trump's election loss, but Woodward met fierce pushback when he argued that left-wing activists were engaged in similar efforts to gain political power.
"You're getting a skeptical look because, yes, there are extreme voices on the left, [but] I don't think this is an equal balance," Robinson said. "What you saw was the Republican Party writ large basically losing its mind but going, becoming a Trumpist party and adopting positions that establishment Republicans were horrified by, very conservative establishment Republicans were horrified by it. I don't see something equivalent happening on the left."
Woodward agreed that was a fair point, and he conceded that Thomas -- the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas -- and Meadows were hardly fringe figures, but he continued to insist that the left also harbored an anti-democratic impulse, which Scarborough then batted down.

(9,369 posts)As a journalist, he tries to remain impartial. That's what a real journalist does. We've become too used to Fox playing its propaganda games. Woodward doesn't do that. We need to have voices of the free press if this democracy is to survive. If we don't, we're screwed, folks.

(9,369 posts)I'm in the middle of listening to the audio of Garrett M. Graff's book, "Watergate," and I didn't know (or forgot) that Woodward was a Republican when the story broke. (Bernstein was a Democrat.) It shows what impartial journalists can do. And he's been all over Republicans for years in his books. I'm really enjoying the book. It goes through a lot of background that I hadn't been aware of or had forgotten.

(111,245 posts)I've found his public appearances disgusting for years. I wish he'd stick to print, his TV appearances go from annoying to infuriating.
Everyone in broadcast media, especially, has done this for decades. It's one of the reasons I turned them off in 2004 and haven't turned them back on.
I'd love to tell them that sure, they'll stomp off in a huff if they're challenged on their bullshit and stay away for weeks or months. However, they'll soon find Pox and the wannabes have a very limited reach and they'll be back, spouting bullshit. "Preserving access" is sheer cowardice and it needs to end.
