(9,429 posts)This was all brought about by a suit against the FEC by CU that made its way to the $upreme Court.
So, couldn't it be undone by campaign finance reform, or by a $C not living in the 18th century and guided by Oliver Cromwell?

(3,571 posts)I think it can't pass with the current makeup of Congress. But /that/ in itself might help motivate more people to get out and vote in the mid-terms.
There is a very high bar to pass a Constitutional Amendment (as there should be), and I just don't think we have the numbers.

(14,516 posts)the Democrats are essentially educating the American people about the corruption inherent in Citizens United.
This may move the Overton Window the way Bernie did talking about Medicare for all Americans, which now has overwhelming support of everyone but for-profit healthcare, big pharma and direct health insurance carriers. So, BIG money courtesy of Citizens United is lined up against Congress EVER doing what is morally right and economically sensible. Because of a few billionaire greed-head parasites for whom profit is more important than the patients ever were or will be.
There's morals and there's money, you know, and our system is all about money.

(3,571 posts)We need bigger majorities, and perhaps that is the ultimate goal to get the vote out.

(8,584 posts)Important to our democracy and wanted by 75+ Percent of its citizens, (would be much higher if brain washed idiots had any sense) that it should be on a ballot for US to pass, not the hand full of criminals that are paid to never let anything to help us proceed into law. This is probably the most important, with gun laws, planet protection, Pharnacy pricing, health care, green energy, voting rights, just to name a few. What the hell kind of Democracy puts full power into the thugs to have this much say about our lives, while they stuff their banks to fuck us over and over.

(1,723 posts)telling us this is huge when it doesn't stand a snowballs chance in hell of ever going anywhere.
We wouldn't be living with citizens united if we stopped using the court as a source for creating law.
That matter should have been addressed by congress in the first place.

(2,685 posts)this point. And it bears celebrating its introduction for reasons cited above, even knowing we don't currently have the votes.

(51,129 posts)In 2010, the Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that corporations and special interest groups could spend nearly unlimited funds on election campaigns. In the decade since, outside groups spent more than $4.4 billion in federal elections nearly $1 billion of which was untraceable dark money with some of the biggest contributors coming from Wall Street, the pharmaceutical industry, and the NRA.
Thanks to one disastrous ruling, wealthy megadonors, corporations, and special interest groups have been able to influence elections when that power should belong with the American people. This has eroded faith in the governments ability to deliver for the people and their families, said Schiff. Dark money should have no place in our democracy. It is time to return power to the people, and overturn Citizens United once and for all.
Specifically, the amendment would make it clear the Constitution does not restrict the ability of Congress or the states to propose reasonable, content-neutral limitations on private campaign contributions and independent expenditures. It would also allow states to enact public campaign financing systems, which can restrict the influence of corporate and private wealth.
