(24,761 posts)They're a miserable bunch of pathetic losers. They can't live unless they drag everyone and everything else down to their level.

(26,500 posts)sure if that counts as a smile. Bush Jr. when talking about the death penalty. Donald Trump, when Carly Fiorina fell off a stage. I've watched some clips of Tucker Swanson making a weird noise. Which I think was him trying to imitate laughter. But that could've been convulsions. But I digress. It's what they're usually smiling and laughing about that is the problem.

(3,332 posts)They might be deranged, lacking in empathy except for those in their in group, but yes, they laugh.
I perform music and provide comedy for senior citizens. I did a show at an assisted living facility, and a woman asked me if I was related to right wing TV and radio host Mark Levin. Same last name. She started telling me while I was setting up how much she loved Mark Levin. Anyway, she laughed her head off at my show.
In short, some are monsters. Most are just garden variety jerks, nuts, and idiots.

(18,402 posts)dehumanizing people you dont like. If you remember the vitriol widely dispensed against Second Wave feminists back in the 70s, the most common accusation was that women were humorless.
This is ridiculous. I despise conservative ideas, and especially the politicians and media personalities who espouse those ideas for money and/or power. But I would never stoop to depriving all conservative people of basic human attributes such as the ability to laugh. That is an old trope that hits way, way below the belt, and lacks any relevance to the problem. Its just a playground-level aspersion.

(3,803 posts)Hunter S Thompson on Richard Nixon (paraphrasing): The Nixon I knew was utterly humorless; I couldnt imagine him laughing at anything, except maybe a paraplegic who wanted to vote democratic but couldnt quite reach the voting lever.
He wrote that over thirty years ago. Its only gotten worse; now they laugh at assault and murder.

(41,959 posts)Right wingers, believe it or not, are people. They laugh, cry, love, rage, do all the things people do.
I despise their philosophy and what a whole lot of them do to try to realize it. And I despise a lot of them. But dehumanization is a bad road. Id love to see them completely unable to carry out their agenda but yes, they do all those things.

(58,785 posts)No one I know personally talks this way.
My own experience is that the trumpist types laugh and smile all too much, not among each other about normal things -- which they do like anyone else, but when thinking politically because they're pleased with themselves. It's part of what's so appalling that they think they're good people prevailing as good people should.
