The Second Prophecy of Fatima demanded that the Pope consecrate Russia to the Sacred Heart of Mary lest Russia continue to spread her disorder.
JPII never really did, and instead chose to Consecrate the World, which was a way to try and do it without pissing off the Russian Orthodox Church.
Anyway, Francis is going all in today at 5 pm Rome time and specifically consecrating Russia.
Whether you believe or not - these are interesting events.

(25,226 posts)And I always thought that 'consecrate' was a positive word in the Catholic Church. How is it used in the context of Russia?
It appears that others in this thread have the same question. So if you can provide us with a brief summary - we'd be appreciative.

(1,474 posts)Essentially the story is the Virgin appeared to three small children in the village at Fatima and revealed prophecies to them. Message is essentially God was pretty fed up with people but Mary was interceding for us. She asked that Russia be consecrated to her immaculate heart by the Pope or else Russia would continue to spread her disorder throughout the world.
JPII never really did as to not anger the Russian Orthodox Church. Francis did it today in a ceremony

(25,155 posts)Obviously JP saw the collapse of communism and Putin probably was not on his radar. I'm sure John Paul was pleased to see the church return to Russia. There has been dialogue between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches since 1960s. There has also been more emphasis on the Eastern Catholic Churches and full communion with the Roman Catholic Church since the 1960s.

(107,767 posts)ROME (AP) Pope Francis presided Friday over a special prayer for Ukraine that harked back to a century-old apocalyptic prophecy about peace and Russia that was sparked by purported visions of the Virgin Mary to three peasant children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917.
Francis invited bishops, priests and ordinary faithful around the world to join him in the consecration prayer, which opened with Francis entering St. Peters Basilica before an estimated 3,500 people. During the event, the pope confessed his sins and absolved others in one of the basilicas confession booths.
The service was Francis latest effort to rally prayers for an end to the war while keeping open options for dialogue with the Russian Orthodox Church and its influential leader, Patriarch Kirill. Francis has yet to publicly condemn Russia by name for its invasion, though his denunciations of the war in Ukraine have grown increasingly outraged.
The prayer ritual is of deep spiritual importance to many Catholics and a source of fascination to others. It deals with some of the more controversial aspects of the Catholic faith: purported visions of the Madonna, revelations of hell, Soviet communism and the death of a pope, and questions about whether the prophecies contained in the so-called secrets of Fatima have already been fulfilled or not.

Maybe you should read the actual prayer before you falsely accuse someone
And on edit: Excerpt from the Prayer
Therefore, Mother of God and our Mother, to your Immaculate Heart we solemnly entrust and consecrate ourselves, the Church and all humanity, especially Russia and Ukraine
Maybe you should exercise a little more due diligence in your research

(32,599 posts)I remember that we used to pray "for the conversion of Russia." That's exactly how the priest would say it at the end of Mass. They never called it the Soviet Union, it was always Russia. I'm pretty sure it was the same in all the US Catholic churches. Can anyone else confirm this?
At the time I wasn't aware that it had anything to do with the Fatima prophecies. However this intrigues me and I'll look into it further. I'm now a lapsed Catholic, or perhaps a no-longer-practicing Catholic, however I've never had the urge to join any other church. So I guess I'm rooting for the Pope, because extra prayers can't hurt and maybe they will help. Am I right?

(25,155 posts)I think the message evolved over time:
At the time of the apparitions, Portugal was undergoing tensions between the secularizing Republican government and more conservative elements in society. The First Republic had begun with the revolution of 1910 overthrowing the constitutional monarch. It was intensely anticlerical and provoked a strong conservative reaction, ultimately leading to the military coup of 1926. Later in Spain during the 1920s and 1930s, as the forces of the Republic gathered strength, armies of faithful Roman Catholics carried images of the Virgin Mary, as protest and protection against groups they called godless.[41]
During the Spanish Second Republic, apparitions of the Virgin Mary were seen on Spanish soil at Ezquioga. Ramona Olazabal said that Mary had marked the palms of her hands with a sword. The visions at Ezquioga were widely covered in the press, as were sixteen other visitations of the Virgin reported in 1931 in Spain.[42] These visions gained much credence in Integrist and Carlist circles and conservative elements in the Spanish Catholic Church actively encouraged the Fátima devotion as a way of countering the perceived threat of atheistic Communism. In Portugal and its former colony of Brazil, conservative groups were sometimes associated with the veneration of Fátima. When Germany invaded Russia in 1941, some Catholics interpreted this in terms of the Fátima apparitions, and believed that the Virgin's prophecy was about to be fulfilled.[citation needed]
The original apparitions took place during the six months preceding the Bolshevik revolution in Russia, and the children related that the Lady talked to them about the need to pray for Russia. Lúcia admitted later that the children initially thought she was requesting prayers for a girl named Russia. In the first edition of Sister Lúcia's memoirs, published after the outbreak of World War II, she focused on the issue of Russia. The warning by the Lady that "if Russia was not consecrated to God, it would spread errors throughout the world" was often seized upon as an anti-communist rallying cry.[citation needed]
The Blue Army of Our Lady of Fátima, for instance, has always been strongly anti-Communist and its members often associated the Fátima story in the context of the Cold War.[43] The Blue Army is made up of Catholics and non-Catholics who believe that by dedicating themselves to daily prayer (specifically, of the Rosary), they can help to achieve world peace and put an end to the error of communism. Organizations such as the Blue Army (nowadays known as the World Apostolate of Fátima) have gained the approval of the Catholic Church

So what does it mean to consecrate Russia?

(6,464 posts)I'm all in for anything positive that would prevent WW3. Anything the Pope would like to say on OUR behalf is good to go. Doesn't he have any influence over that religious nut who said the whole thing is over gay parades, or something like that?
I'm not Catholic, but I have read up on Fatima in the past, and they never quite get around to saying what that Third Prophecy really says. It was supposed to be something truly terrifying.
I hope that Russia understands what the Pope did (I don't, but I'm not Catholic) and doesn't take it to mean that they are blessed to win in war. You know, like a prebattle blessing from the unit priest, or something.
I think that most of us here are praying daily for Ukraine and peace. I think our sense of justice just takes over, and we have anger over what Russia has done. So, is this consecration like some kind of confession box where the priest tells the sinner that his sins are forgiven, go and sin no more?
And, yeah, I think it is interesting. Thanks for posting.
