JK Rowling has hit back at Vladimir Putin, after the Russian president cited her in a wide-ranging speech that saw him criticise "cancel culture".
At a televised meeting on Friday, Mr Putin compared recent criticism of the Harry Potter author to that faced by pro-war Russian composers and writers.

Rowling has been criticised for her views on transgender issues.
"Critiques of Western cancel culture are possibly not best made by those currently slaughtering civilians for the crime of resistance, or who jail and poison their critics," the Harry Potter author wrote on Twitter.

(2,403 posts)If it is all over I havent seen it. I have seen where she makes statement regarding trans and womens rights and the murky area there. Calling her a transphobe seems like a gross mischaracterization to me.

(2,403 posts)I mean I am not really sure just what the fuck she is trying to say here. It seems like an attempt at raising attention more than anything. I dont doubt that she could be a transphobe. I just havent went looking for it. And a google search of Is JK Rowling a transphobe doesnt aeem like the sort that I want to see the results of.
I dont however doubt that she could be.

(1,962 posts)As a result, I have zero desire to read any of her garbage - whether it's Potter or non-Potter. I never read any of her stuff prior to her removing her mask and showing us what a bigot she is... I have even less of a desire to do so now.
If The Silkworm is awful, vile, transphobic, etc... I'll gladly take your word on it. But I despise Rowling and her transphobia so much that I would rather read The Memoirs of Richard M. Nixon before I read anything she writes.

(1,962 posts)I'm sure someone with more patience than me has cataloged all her transphobic tweets, along with the charming things she's had to say in interviews. Just like the QOP in this country, it seems her life is a neverending mission to punch down on the trans community.
How bad is she? Honestly? She's so damned transphobic that she blocked Stephen King on Twitter (the link I first posted) because he came out in defense of trans women.
And thank you for taking the time to read The Silkworm. If it's that bad... I think I'd get about 20 pages through it before deciding it has more use in a lit fireplace than on a bookshelf.

(90,667 posts)But in fact I have read all her Potter books (which are justifiably famous) and have sampled her adult novels, which are not to my taste.
Apparently the Potter books are such that young people across cultures write themselves into the stories in online fanzines. Some years back I read that young fans in India were convinced Harry himself was Indian (like Padma and her twin) because of his coal-black hair. I appreciated how she took on radical adult politics, right through the fascist takeover of the Ministry and Hogwarts itself, and showed that youngsters could form their own resistance movement. Ive been intrigued that her stage plays have ranged afield in casting Hermione as Black, and in other ways that invite youngsters to continue to write themselves in to the story. Quite awhile ago she said Dumbledore was gay and he always had been gay and that raised a stink in, yes, America.
I do not follow her utterances on Twitter or interviews, except very sporadically, where she clearly must have revealed her human fallibility and feet of clay. Viciously.

(13,023 posts)is named Kingsley Shacklebolt. The anti-Semitic trope of beak-nosed greedy goblins that work in a bank. The one Asian character named Cho Chang. The one Jewish character named Anthony Goldstein. And of course an Irish character named Seamus Finnegan.
Shes a walking fount of bigotry but yeah after the fact Dumbledor got to be gay.

the fanfic or reviews of the fanfic. Read with an open mind to the world she created, an open mind to the several intersecting genres she works with, including the British boarding school genre.
Read it as British, not American. Look for representatives of the former British Empire to show up: India, Africa, China, the Middle East. Look for representatives of the United Kingdom, where the children live and where the school is placed: Irish, Welsh, Scots, Anglo-Saxon and their social classes. Have you ever been to London? I was there once, and was staggered at the layers of diversity: the whole former Empire comes to London to do business or to stay, and then some.
Kingsley Shacklebolt is one of the adult heroes, for gods sake.
As for students, immediate classmates of Harrys are drawn vividly redheaded Ron, who comes from an economically disadvantaged but talented family, Padma and Parvati Patil, Cho Chang, and others.
The rest are background crowding the hallways, their races and religions and family origins implied by the ones the reader is introduced to. This is not a sociology text book with charts and graphs. It is a work of fiction. You, the reader, are invited to fill in the spaces. Children, for whom the Potter books were written, understand this intuitively and the spaces are where they write themselves in.

(11,631 posts)I haven't read her twitter nor much of her books either.. nor do I intend to. But if she wants to smack Putin in the mouth and humiliate him after he held her up as some sort of kindred victim of the evil western cancellors... I'm all for it. Enemy of my enemy and all and Putin is a much more heinous enemy no matter what Rowling ever wrote on twitter.

And, no, world.. Sometimes the "enemy of my enemy" is not our friend. JacKass Rowling is proof of that.

(10,039 posts)Instead of focusing on JKR, focus on Putin's real target. This was tailor made right wing, American, fascists. Snippets of this diatribe are, no doubt, making their way across RW boards at this very second. I wouldn't be surprised if Tucker embraced it vey soon.
