UN - Official Hurricane Sandy prep thread
Maybe this is already going. And I have seen some advice randomly scattered in other threads. Thought it might be helpful to put it in one place. If this is already in the works, forgive me.
I'll go first with my 2 cents.
Leave if you can. If you can't. Be prepared. Don't go outside and don't do something foolish that endangers first responders.
If your in a flood prone area get out. An old coastal saying is "you can hide from the wind, but you have to run from the water".
Get batteries. Also get candles and matches or a lighter and save your batteries as much as possible. But be fire safe.
Check or Get prescription meds filled for at least a couple of weeks worth.
Fill up every container you have with tap water. Much cheaper than bottled.
Fill up your car and your gas containers. Don't use any container not designed for it.
Get out your blankets and warm clothes and have them ready.
Move any real valuables to an interior room. If a window is broken out, don't endanger yourself trying fight it back. Abandon the room until the storm passes. Don't waste time taping windows. Doesn't work and its a pain to remove.
Have a prearranged way to check in with family at some regular interval. For example - email to one of them at a particular address or call one of them at a particular number. They will be worried about you and it will help if they can sit by a phone or watch an email they know you'll use as soon as you can.
Don't forget the needs of your pets. Food, water, medications ...
Get out all your board games, puzzles, books - anything you have that will occupy time for you and especially little ones.
Talk to neighbors about how to prepare and how to communicate during and after the storm. Stick together as much as you can. Be prepared to share what you have.
Help won't be "never", but it could easily be days or even a week or two. The rest of us will be thinking of you all.
