In less than a day SIX Generals were killed during the Battle of Antietam in 1862 (US Civil War).

When Generals lead soldiers at the front of the spear, they die.

Russian leaders have historically led from the front.

416 Russian Generals died during WW2.

For crappy performance during Operation Barbarossa.

Every division of Russian armed forces had political officers who had free reign to execute or arrest Commanders under order from Moscow.

EDIT: to add, in ~2 hours at the Battle of Franklin (US Civil War) 5 Generals were KIA.

More than 400 Confederate and 580 Union soldiers advanced to the rank of general during the course of the Civil War. (More than 1 in 10 would die.)
