https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60807538Ukraine's defence ministry says another Russian general, Lt Gen Yakov Rezantsev, was killed in a strike near the southern city of Kherson.
Rezantsev was the commander of Russia's 49th combined army.
A western official said he was the seventh general to die in Ukraine, and the second lieutenant general - the highest rank officer reportedly killed.
It is thought that low morale among Russian troops has forced senior officers closer to the front line.
In a conversation intercepted by the Ukrainian military, a Russian soldier complained that Rezantsev had claimed the war would be over within hours, just four days after it began.
Ukrainian media reported that the general was killed at the Chornobaivka airbase near Kherson, which Russia is using as a command post and has been attacked by Ukraine's military several times.

(1,090 posts)According to Gen. Ben Hodges, the reason the generals are closer to the front line is that, unlike the U.S and other Western militaries, the Russian military does not have a whole layer of Non-Commissioned Officers, NCO's, who train troops back home and run troop operations on the battlefield. And so the generals have to take over.
It's a pretty stupid way to run a military, a further black mark on kgb man.

..Also provided in article is list of generals who have been killed on the battlefield in Russian provoked war, invasion of Ukraine.
Thanks for post. Just stunning, Ukrainian military has managed to kill 7 high ranking generals thus weakening Putin's plan to take country by force and are now on the offense. Hope they force Russians to retreat soon.

I believe the guy in the center is Russian Army by his insignia.
I'm sure they don't wear dress bling into the field but Ukrainians sure as hell have got them tagged somehow.

(4,410 posts)Just because one general here and one general there are killed doesnt prove much. Yes, its nice to see them fall.
But remember when we were always picking off Al Quedas #2 man? There always are more bubbling up.
There are more than 10,000 dead soldiers. A few of them will be higher ranking officers- its just par for the Russian course out there.
Keep fighting, Ukraine!

(8,239 posts)The death of this many Russian Generals is a big deal.

(14,075 posts)That was blue on green. It wasn't during combat.
Mcafree was being interviewed and said that generals dying was actually a good sign for the Russians because it showed they still had a desire to fight and win.
But they can't coordinate their movements, which is not healthy.
They can still level the country though.

(14,075 posts)Us and afghan troops had color designation. It means an afghan army soldier attacked a us soldier.

(17,759 posts)What they represent, however, does. A lack of a professional corps of noncoms, so what little professionalism the Russian military possesses, the senior officer corps, has to expose itself to direct fire to get anything done. That's no way to run a war.
When I was in service, it was the Chiefs who were the beating heart of the Navy. Commissioned guys gave the direction and the Chiefs made it happen. Same in every branch. Russia doesn't have that and it shows.

(4,410 posts)That is always how Russian militaries have been organized. The self-sufficient NCO is an American thing- not a military standard thing in other nations.
Russia takes a while to learn to fight. It took years to get Hitlers forces out of Russia. We are in day 31 of what could be a five year war.

(17,759 posts)I may be wrong and this thing drags on for years, but I doubt their economy can sustain that. Probably less than a year before plunging living standards, mass unemployment and general unrest put an end to Putin's fever dream.
Their economy and military alike are heavily dependent on western technology and expertise. They have little homegrown industrial capacity and little economic depth like we're use to in the west. All the "shiny" stuff some have been preprogrammed to fear is limited in quantity, based on western components and some is already used or destroyed. Some of it was just glossy ads, hype and nowhere near deployable. What does exist, doesn't seem to work very well. Basic stuff like command and control systems are ridiculously amateurish. Their battlefield command net is broadcasting in the clear? What?!!
Actual battlefield performance of much of their precision guided munitions is ...awful.

....just to name a few of the insurmountable problems....
End of the day, Russian military resupply is limited. Ukraine's is nearly unlimited. With moral in their ranks amazingly low even by Russian standards, and desertions beginning to mount, their military may collapse as an effective fighting force long before their economy craters.

(5,723 posts)Russian Generals are getting killed though in a MUCH larger "army".
But the problem, I think, with this comparison is that it's not really accurate:
Al Queda's and Russia's motivations are far, far far different.

(9,839 posts)They only have 13 generals left. They're going to have to do some furious promoting to return to former levels. Or maybe Vladolf thinks these guys were disloyal. Or he thinks generals grow on trees. Something weird is going on when that many generals are that close to the front......

(18,806 posts)These high level guys go up to the front of the line to see what is holding things up and the snipers take them out.
There was one that was killed by his own troops. I guess morale in the Russian ranks is hitting bottom.

(11,965 posts)They lead from the front in their military doctrine.
And frankly... I think part of it is because these guys are leading troops that have failed miserably in the field.
What happens when failing Russian Generals return home after failure?
In 1941, Russia executed 300+ Generals after Germany struck deeply into Russia.
