BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Students at Medaille College protested Friday over a recent incident involving campus security officers.

Medaille's Student Government Association Student Programming Coordinator, Leya Slade, sent 7 News an email detailing what happened.

According to the SGA, the security officers — who are employed by Vista Security Group and are contracted to work at Medaille College and a number of other local colleges — entered a number of students' rooms around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 13, without uniforms, masks, or knocking on the students' doors.

Medaille College President Dr. Kenneth Macur confirmed all of the details of the incident to 7 News Friday morning.

Per Medaille College's On-Campus Housing License & Residential Policies for the 2021-2022 academic year, security officers may not enter a student's room without reasonable suspicion there has been a violation of campus policy or illegal activity.

Apparently the private security also walked in late on students getting ready for bed partially clothed. I'm curious as to civil rights of students in college settings?

Just because it's a college policy does not mean it doesn't violate civil rights.

2. Campus not rent a cops

At Purdue I remember one day getting a knock at the door. I opened it and had a badge staring me in the face. Apparently my roommate had the bright idea to go into the tunnels and one of them must have been caught (because they got my roommate's name). They did search his area (I didn't ask for a warrant to enter being 17 and they were leaving my area alone). They found a pot plant in his closet (the guy was an absolute moron). Somehow he survived the incident and finished the year. I lost contact with him after my freshman year.

My other encounter with the police knocking was when I must have been around ten. My older cousin (around 14) was apparently in the back room doing God knows what with a bunch of boys (I think pot was involved). I was happily watching wrestling on the tube. Got a knock and the badge in my face for a reported disturbance. I don't know if they asked to enter - they just barged in. Rounded up my cousin and her friends and sat us on the couch. Then they went around the room asking for ages. My parents later asked did I have the sound on the television too loud. They made me go knock on the bedroom door to get my cousin (this made me fearful because I knew she would beat the crap out of me).

7. No-knocks are scary.

When I was in my early twenties my girlfriend, her girlfriend, and I were staying at an ordinary motel. I was sleeping by myself in the bed away from the door and woke up to my girlfriend's girlfriend standing up on the other bed half naked and screaming.

The cops looked around a bit, didn't find whatever they were looking for, and left without explanation or apology. I think it was just their way of saying they didn't want us in town.

There are few reasons for no-knock invasions other than intimidation. In this case it seems the message is "Big Brother is watching you!"
