Letters from an American:
'Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson endured vicious attacks from Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who vow to reject her confirmation...the hearings inspired Republicans to challenge many of the civil rights decisions that most Americans believe are settled law....The rights Republicans challenged this week included the right to use birth control, access abortion, marry across racial lines, and marry a same-sex partner
A 2019 speech by thenattorney general William Barr at the University of Notre Dame offers an explanation...by self-government, the Framers did not mean the ability of people to vote for representatives of their choice. Rather, he said, they meant individual morality: the ability to govern oneself. And, since people are inherently wicked, that self-government requires the authority of a religion: Christianity.'

(6,703 posts)If that's the case this time around again, the twenty-thirties should be real entertaining. In planning for such eventuality it would be a good time to elect another Franklin Roosevelt in a couple of cycles. Not much can be done for a society which adheres to a high tolerance for hypocrisy and targeted mean-spiritedness.

(22,981 posts)They're like locusts--they live underground for seventeen years, then emerge, make a lot of noise until they're exhausted, lather, rinse, repeat. Our problem is that they're not becoming exhausted as quickly now. We have got to cut off their energy source so they go burrow again. And to keep them from reproducing in such numbers.

(86,071 posts)christians believe. Had it crammed down my throat in my younger years. I was screamed at and told I was evil and that only by being baptized could I be seen as anything else. Since I refused, I was even called a snake by the severe zealots in the bunch.
They really get upset when you don't see things their way, sadly, their way is absurd.

(5,717 posts)I am a Christian, and I am a very flawed person, but I don't believe that people are inherently evil. I believe that humanity is a work in progress, and we all need to work to improve ourselves.
I find it interesting that your church felt that way about baptism. Jesus was without sin, and yet He presented himself to be baptized by John. To me, baptism is a commitment to try to live the best life we can under Christian principles, a commitment made either by ourselves or by our parents to raise us in those principles.

(86,071 posts)Of what they were actually foisting upon us, though. They said those things you describe but they were all about subjugation using the cherry picked verses of choice as justification.
I managed to survive long enough to get away from them, now I don't have many questions about what is what. Just walk the walk and everything comes around in some form.

Silly me, I guess I'd rather have healthcare than live in a right-wing 'christian' theocracy.

(17,781 posts)The more they realize they cannot take society back to a time when people who look like them were ascendant in all things, the more radical they become. We're seeing that play out in real time this week. In essence, they're unamerican and should be labeled as such everywhere, every time. They simply don't believe in America's ethos if it applies to ANYONE other than people who look just like them. In defense of their reactionism, many like Barr seize on some of the more base thoughts of a few of the founders, like fear of the mob (John Adams) or the ascendancy of religion (Patrick Henry), and miss the whole idea of America...on purpose. Lucky for us, more progressive minds won most of the ideological battles back then.
The central ideas of America scares their little hearts and hurts their little minds. Luckily for us, they're dying off and the America that's emerging is very different than the one they, and I, grew up in. And some of us old folks are goddamn happy about that, so go pound sand, Bill Barr. I'll rejoice on the day he and those like him start that long, dirt nap.

4. Evidence of having integrated the heart of the Gospel so it is reflected in everything you do.
5. An answer from your own experience to Jesus question , who do you say that I am? that matches his life and ministry
