(1,666 posts)but having watched the gun self defense debate for a couple of decades, some do in fact see defense as escalation.

(21,729 posts)What if Ukraine received weapons/missiles that could reach Russia? Would the Russian people then figure out they've been lied to by Putin?

(8,674 posts)Putin will almost certainly go unpunished, though he is directly responsible for the deaths of thousands.

(45,163 posts)Russia was never under any threat from Ukraine for anything. People existing is not a threat. That could apply to conservatives who hate that certain types of people exist.

(2,263 posts)Putin was absolutely, personally threatened by, and in fear for his life from all those million, bajillion Nazis in Ukraine! 😂

(35,173 posts)NATO's been pretty consistent.
They have to defend themselves to victory. But since that means not really being able to take back territory once the Russians are dug in, this means "offenses" are mostly wage low-level "clear this village" or "cut off supplies so this given troop formation can't defend itself when attacked with anti-armor weapons, some artillery, and infantry."
Every time I hear a politician saying that what's *really* important is "to stop the fighting," I wonder why they weren't saying that in fall 1942. Instead they weren't calling for ending hostilities but winning.
Personally, I'd think that peace negotiations--serious ones--should start after Voronez and Rostov-na-Donu have been slammed with 3 weeks' heavy bombardment and the hryvnia's been introduced as the currency in Belgorod and Taganrog. (A good down payment would be to have the Kerch' bridge hit by a few missiles.)
Then again, I'm not feeling very pacifist these days.

(8,197 posts)...without the things they need. The blockade over mariupol will likely not be broken with what Ukraine currently has. And the more people that starve to death, the less likely in my opinion, not sending them what they ask for is justified.
