There are forces in the United States that ENDORSE that sort of posture.

(5,780 posts)1. Even Obama had to ask NATO members to pay their fair share

I think the difference now is that Western Europe has woken up and Biden doesn't have to say this. Germany has already signaled a big increase in defense spending. I can't imagine that France and the UK won't follow suit. I also imagine this will increase the "What the Hell were we thinking with Brexit? " sentiment in England, but that ship - as they say - has sailed.
I want to take this opportunity to commend Greece for being one of the five NATO allies that spends 2 percent of GDP on defense, a goal that we have consistently set but not everybody has met, Obama said. Greece has done this even during difficult economic times. If Greece can meet this NATO commitment, all our NATO allies should be able to do so.

(35,191 posts)2. Not much point.
Most of the larger countries have already said they're increasing military readiness expenditures.
More than a couple have said they should have started it before. They're right. All the munitions going to Ukraine are drawing down NATO's reserves. It's good that the weapons are going--and they should add the MiGs, SUs, tanks, artillery + shells, S-300s and all the S-300 missiles they have, anti-ship weapons, and APCs.
Then buy better, and much, much more.
