(2,998 posts)I'm not saying it was a gaffe as a matter of my opinion, but because his own staff had to rush to the media afterwards and clarify that what he said wasn't what he actually meant.

I'm not a fan of throwing gasoline on the fire of this situation, but, even if you are a fan of Biden's words, it's still a gaffe because he went off script and had to have his staff walk back his words. Not a good day for Biden, imo- it's easy to understand him becoming emotional after meeting with refugees, but what if Russia moves to their version of Defcon 3 because of this speech? What exactly will that have accomplished?

(11,704 posts)Joe said the quiet part out loud and then sent out the staff to walk it back for plausible deniability.

(13,142 posts)I don't think these are "whoops" moments, nor are they gaffes. I think Biden puts these true statements out there to get them out there. He told the Russian people he is with them, and they aren't the enemy. He wants to make it clear that Putin's the only thing causing problems.

(13,142 posts)The message has been delivered by President Biden himself in a historic, courageous, eloquent, memorable way. Of course, the White House will dial it down after. That's their job.

The line about Putin was meant for the Russian people. They are the ones to act on it.

(13,028 posts)But from news reports I am seeing the White House is backtracking even on the idea of a regime change. And if George Bush was allowed to call for regime change in Iraq why can't President Biden do the same about Russia?
wnylib
(21,146 posts)And Bush's unwarranted war in Iraq gave us a bad international rep. Turned nations against us. We want unity now.

The Kremlins response is ironic and hilarious: the Russian president should only be a choice of the people of the Russian federation, as if they have a democracy.

(9,808 posts)Would anyone have been shocked in WWII id Churchill or Roosevelt had said that Hitler could not remain in power? No. Putin may not have murdered as many people as Hitler, but he is just as evil. And the only way to bring peace to Ukraine and the other countries Putin wants for his Russian Empire is to get Putin out of power. No one is safe until he is gone.

It was artfully submitted for consideration... consideration that I hope those who are able to act, will be moved to act upon.

(5,490 posts)We--the world--cannot normalize relations with Russia as long as Putin is its leader. Look at what he's done in Ukraine. He has killed thousands of civilians, he has displaced millions, he has destroyed its infestructure. The collective world has spent probably over a trillion dollars to stop him. This action has disrupted the world economy. I could go on.
There are some things that can't be forgiven.
