Lviv in the West is getting the crap bombed out of it now, most from the air but some missiles.
The three NATO countries with the S300 air defense systems will not send them to Ukraine unless they get them replaced by NATO.
NATO does not seem willing at this point.
Russian air power may eventually win this war dammit.

Eastern Ukraine is getting hammered. Various types of SAMs are arriving in UKR along with some other really nasty defense systems.

(2,118 posts)They are a Russian system. Where would "we" get them?
How would the 3 NATO countries with S300s get them replaced by NATO?

(564 posts)NATO has declined.
Pisses me off.

(2,118 posts)NATO doesn't have an "official" SAM. Some NATO countries use US weapons, some Russian weapons, and some have their own.

(564 posts)They are MANPADs (portable by a single man) and limited in range and altitude, ie 15,000 feet.
SAMs are larger, carried on a truck or trailer and can easily reach the planes at 40,000 feet.

(36,094 posts)As they are missiles that are launched from the surface at an airborne target. Size and range are irrelevant.
Man portable air defense systems (MANPADS) are surface to air missiles that can be carried by one or more men.

(2,971 posts)Theyre far larger, and would have to be integrated into their air defense system. Its a far more complex undertaking than packing a bunch of MANPADs into a crate and shipping it to them.

(564 posts)Or the higher altitude planes that are doing the bombing now. Russia has changed their aerial attack to higher altitudes and longer distances of attack.
NATO has had a month to get UA S300s (SAMs) and has pissed it away. Bulgaria, Greece, and Slovakia own S300s but wanted Patriots before they would send them to UA.
And Ukraine already has and knows how to use and integrate S300s.

(564 posts)I am in daily contact with two friends in Lviv.
But seriously thanks for pointing out my error. I am just so frustrated at Russian air superiority right now.
