Wow! We have an amazing group of new people coming on and you're so smart! And funny! I LOVE you recent noobs. Yeah - a faker from the other side poseurs in occasionally, and y'all might get slapped by paranoid duers -- sorry for that.
But wow. Thanks for showing up - w/ a wide variety of perspectives and interesting posts. WELCOME TO DU.

(345 posts)I even opened an acct years ago. But finally found my voice. I think for people who have been around
forever, its good to remember that there are plenty of people who never post but who read DU and are right in
agreement with you. Through those times you gave us support and hope without even knowing it.
THANKS!

(15 posts)I am a newbie and how nice it is to be among like minded friends! I love the wisdom you "old timers" display! I recently moved to a new neighborhood and it is full of Romney yard signs! (12,882 posts)I too, welcome all the noobs - good to see new interests and voices. While I'm not a 5-figure veteran (yet), DU is my main news source. It's also where I come to ease the fears from Rightist Crazies. I'm strictly a taker at DU, and I love the intellect and camaraderi I find comfort with. Long live DU and those who make it what it is!

(48 posts)and I love it here because unlike over at the Huffington Post (what a disgrace that site is, hardly liberal, in my opinion) here I don't have to worry about censorship or some moderator deciding if my post is "politically correct" enough for them.

(2 posts)and this is not my first post. I deleted my original account and created a new one.
My point is that I am starting to dislike the word "liberal" because it is becoming just as hypocritical as being a Republican. I don't like when so-called liberal websites - which should be celebrating freedom of speech - use things like "juries" to remove people's thoughts. This is why I too abandoned Huffington Post and a few of the other blogs, because I don't like the idea of a "big brother" moderating mine or anyone else's thoughts. Suppressing freedom of speech is a GOP platform - it shouldn't be ours, we're better than that.
I would rather call myself a "progressive" rather than a "liberal" now. But I find that if you express opinions on a board like this, liberals will bully you the same as Republicans. The difference being that while Republicans will do it to your face, liberals do it passive-aggressively with "juries" instead of direct contact.
I am planning to start my own political blog where commenters will be free to say anything they want, be it profane or politically incorrect, unless it is outright racist, violent, or supportive of GOP policies. (Being a progressive blog, I wouldn't see any reason to allow Pro-GOP comments.)
I'll still check out DU, but I won't be commenting here because I don't enjoy walking on eggshells worrying about whose feelings are getting hurt. We should be able to express ourselves freely here, and I don't see that happening.
MADem
(135,425 posts)If you will review the TOS, you would see that we are free to express ourselves, but, like in the real world, we take our chances. Bear in mind, if you piss off the majority of the community, they will let you know. And if you're a continuous disruptor, you'll be shown the door by the admins.
Have fun with your blog. I'll give you this--you're one of the few gripers who actually said they were going to go start up their own discussion group instead of expecting the website to bend to their will. Most complainers think DU is a charity and the admins are running this site for their amusement.
AFAIAC, this place is the best site on the web for news, opinions, conversations, etc. Are there noodgy little things that don't necessarily suit me? Sure. That's life. I get over it. I adjust. The good far outweighs the noodgy.

(141 posts)...difference being that while Republicans will do it to your face, liberals do it passive-aggressively with "juries" instead of direct contact." Well....The only thing I've found that a repuke will do to your face, call it bullying, or whatever you please, will be to have a classic Freudian hate/loathing transference manifestation, for it has NO basis of fact to back any argument. Now I may be reaching here, but it seems to me that your posts are filled with Freudian "slips", telling on yourself, starting with the "I have risen / deleted O.A. / I'm back", segueing through the "remove peoples thoughts", scootchin down the big "R"epublican / little "l"iberal, and the qualifying?, I'm searching for me cloths pin. Good luck with the blog, and you sure will be missed.

(19,288 posts)And this place is pretty much what brought me to the internet age. I'd mostly forgotten how to type and still have terrible conversational manners. My first post was a stream of consciousness diatribe with no punctuation. It all ran together in a run-on sentence from hell. Plus I've always been a phonetic speller. Which as you may have guessed by now spells TROLL.
I was a lonely little Idaho Dem. A bitter, angry, sarcastic, nasty, cranky, crab, of a disheartened, lonely Dem. So I often posted crabby, cranky, smart-assed, sarcastic remarks, that were in fact the opposite of what I felt or thought but I felt so duped by Dubya, I was hopeless.
Soon after the sarcasm tag was born. Sometime nasty complaints are obvious sarcasm and sometimes it needs a tag.
That's my free advice. Now, get in there and start winning elections.

(296 posts)Thanks for making me feel so welcome, and thanks to you all for making this "Election Central" to me. Mostly, I post at MSM sites (i.e, HuffPost) where I fight their misleading headlines, slanted stories, and ALL attacks on Obama, but as we get closer to the election, it wears me down and depresses the hell out of me to spend so much time in a negative environment. Then I come here, and I get my mojo back to go out and fight some more.

(3,712 posts)...DU, the (inter)national information sharing system that is this site, quite a delight upon which to lite. Is there anything on the right quite like this?
Actually none of us are newbies, as all of us (here and not) are but the boundless "ONE I AM" differently wrapped as progressives and regressives. Or so it is true if the Old Testament correctly reports God as saying "I am that I am".

(1,353 posts)Had to resign on with new name but have been a DU fan since the Bush v Gore days... This is the 1st place I go to in the morning for my news and also when I need some voices of reason during this election. I truly believe Obama has this election and think the media is hyping a "too close to call" race just for ratings... But then I thought Kerry had it too and was one of the many here who was sick for days after that one...so would love some confirmation that we've got this!!! Here in NY waiting for Frankenstorm so DU will provide distraction for sure! LOVE LOVE LOVE DU!!!!!

(13,421 posts)Not as many of the old timers left anymore. Everybody was new at some point--ALL of us--and it gets easy to forget that after a while, I guess. Taking that first few steps can be really creepy, and somebody giving you crap for a low post count just because they don't agree with your point doesn't help much. That is one thing that has been a constant here at DU, but I really think it is so deeply rooted in our formation and our early days it may never go away.
DU came about at a time when "liberal" was borderline of being a dangerous term, and when most of the progressives out there were feeling pretty low or else really pissed off--neither of which will contribute to being warm and fuzzy. The "selection" of Dubya had just happened, tempers were frayed, and Earl, Skinner, and Elad put together DU. In those early days the disrupters were a constant thing and there was no set of "on call" moderators to deal with them in any kind of speedy fashion. People like me were out there looking for "a home" because places like Salon were no longer possible (they'd gone pay to post right after the selection...) and the other main boards were over run with squawking Neo-cons. People defending their "home" will get pretty vicious. DU was and still is, no exception.
Welcome to you if you are here with a passion for politics and if you carry Dem ideals. Carry them with you here and you'll do fine once you get past the ass-hattery that goes on sometimes. Just keep in mind that some of these folks are kinda like those guys you saw in photos of returning war vets--they have that 1000 yard stare and some of them are wrapped a little tight. Oh--and don't fer Pete's sake, say you love Olive Garden or Circumcision. You'll start one hell of a brawl.
Laura
Added on edit: You all DO realize you can see when people joined DU? Click on the Member icon in any post and it will take you to info about them--like how long they've been here. You can't tell just by looking at number of posts because we've had people that have been members here forever, but they maybe are not prolific writers or maybe don't get into the social stuff.

(211 posts)It's nice to be here. I'm guessing that one of the reasons there are so many newbies suddenly is this election. Obama is one of the easiest presidents to be proud of, so I'm here to do my little bit in rallying support for him. Plus, it's helping me stay sane.
