Sean Penn vows to publicly smelt his Oscar if Academy Awards refuses to let Ukraine's Zelensky speak

By Bob Brigham
Published March 26, 2022

Academy Award-winning actor and humanitarian activist Sean Penn had harsh words for everyone involved in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky does not address the awards show on Sunday.

Penn made the comments during an interview with CNN's Jim Acosta.

"If the Academy has elected not to do it, if presenters have elected not to pursue the leadership in Ukraine — who are taking bullets and bombs for us along with the Ukrainian children that they are trying to protect — then I think that every single one of those people and every bit of that decision will have been the most obscene moment in all of Hollywood history," Penn declared. "And I hope that that is not what is happening."

4. So many questions to ponder here

1. Is the Oscars show the proper venue for Zelensky to address the American people? I thought the Oscars ratings have been terrible over the past years. So maybe some prime time special address to the nation might reach more people, not just the Hollywood elites wanting to get their annual dose of virtue signaling in. Not to mention that movies and massive aerial assault and destruction aren’t the greatest fit. I mean, a plea for help, followed by a performance of theJames Bond theme, or that song from Encanto ... ouch.

2. I get it that he was an actor, so that connection does make sense. But isn’t he kind of busy at the moment overseeing the devastation of his country?

3. Will anyone care if Sean Penn melts his Oscar? Will it help Ukrainians?

I could go on, but what I really want to say is that I, along with the vast majority of Americans have been desperately concerned about Ukraine for the past month. We’ve been glued to our tvs and doing what we can to help. So I’m not against Zelensky speaking anytime, anywhere (I’ve watched quite a few of his speeches already.) But the Oscars? I don’t get it.

Sean Penn, as an actor, is as self-obsessed as the rest of them. Good for him with documenting this horror. But no one is going to care if he "smelts" his statues.

Zelenskyy has the platform to speak anywhere he wants. The silly Oscar ceremony? No one cares about these people.

I could care less what Penn does with his Oscar. The man is too self-important for my liking.

The Oscars are not about Sean Penn.

The war in Ukraine is not about Sean Penn.

I applaud his activism. But every unrelated event does not have to be transformed by his activism.

Seems to me if he had the power of his convictions he'd be dead, but instead he just got a lot of attention for a few weeks with Susan Sarandon.

I wonder if President Zelenskyy WANTS to address the awards show. Did Penn make him a promise or something?

Basically I agree with one of the previous posters who suggested that Penn auction his award statue and donate the money to Ukraine.

Btw, Penn can act but he's not the most agreeable person, yet women fall for him. One of my younger friends, an actress in Mad at the Moon, Baywatch, etc, Lori Ashton, dated him for 2yrs.

It's not like Zelensky isn't a bit busy at the moment.

Someone's been sniffing their own farts.

It's a self-congratulatory awards show full of narcissists. It's not that important.

He didn't believe in movies competing against one another. It started as a studio gimmick to get people to the movies.
