"SNIP.......
Women in Afghanistan are struggling with new Taliban rules requiring them to be accompanied by a male relative, one in a series of measures that they say threaten to squeeze them out of public and professional life, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The official new rules dont bar women from traveling alone near their homes
However, women across the country say guardianship rules are being imposed on a far wider scale, and include needing a male relative to join them for basic tasks such as entering government buildings, seeing a doctor or catching a taxi.

(24,589 posts)I've shared here about our Afghan student we hosted as a high school junior in 2013 on a US State Dept. program
By her wits and courage alone, she and her younger sister, also an exchange student, defected to Canada at the end of their year, rather than return to their family in Afghanistan.
Nadia graduated college in 2018 - an event we attended near Toronto, and last month her sister married there.
Nadia has several sisters and other family still in Afghanistan.

it was a tough time.
But after she defected (running away from the airport motel with her sister - ages 16 and 17) the night before her flight back to Afghanistan, we adults wordlessly let them go. We did not call law enforcement. We didn't discuss it but we were all clearly thinking the same thing. In retrospect, recklessly risky for the girls!
It was a State Dept. program with strict rules. They shut it down the next year - too many defections!

(63,221 posts)At least they are safe and hopefully living full, happy lives now. It would have been a nightmare for them if they had gone back. I am grateful to you for supporting them.

(32,992 posts)We gave the women of afghanistan 20 years without these medievalists controlling their lives.
It's not much but it meant something to many of them. I can't say if it was worth it.

(63,221 posts)insecure they cannot let the women in their society live their lives freely. There is something very psychologically wrong with them. I wonder if even one of them has ever thought to question that of themselves.
