Seems the Russian army doesn't have much of professional class of non-commissioned officers...sergeants...who are between officers and troops and carry out the officers orders and command the troops to do so. They have to train promising conscripts for that role, but it takes time and conscripts are only in for a year so the process is forever going on. In our army, re-upping and making it a career can lead to a life with good pay and benefits, and some power.

And because of this, when there are holdups or delays or things not going well, officers have to go up to the front to see what's happening. They are therefore more often in the line of fire than officer corps in other countries' militarys. And that line of fire sometimes comes from their own angry troops.

An incident just recently was reported of tank driver running his tank over a colonel.
