(1,663 posts)My mother use to also tell us about the Holland tunnel fire. Our hair use to stand on end and we would get completely silent while my father drove through the tunnel. I think that was her goal.

Cortlandt no longer runs to West Street. It is only one block now. All of those businesses died long ago when the WTC ws built.

(12,633 posts)Moms and kids were taken off rooftops of 2 story houses by Coast Guard in boats (Dads were at work). This is IN New York City. In those days there was a CG station nearby. Now--I don't think so.
