was taken by Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945, moments after his iconic flag raising photo. The six men who raised the second flag appear in this picture; Ira Hayes is seated at the far left.

This is not a “victory photo.” The battle of Iwo Jima would continue to rage for more than a month before the island was secured.

this photograph was taken on that day. It's strongly suggested, as he is in the habit of posting pictures on or about the anniversary of the day they were taken.

I'm sure there are official Navy pictures from that day.
