This White Russian song dates from 1920, at the end of the Russian civil war, when the White Russians under Pyotr Nikolayevich Wrangel were finally defeated

Because the populations, that had suffered under the White Terror, did not appreciate what selfless sacrifice the White Army troops had shown by inflicting that terror, as the White Russians were becoming aware of their imminent defeat, the soldiers sang with sad nostalgia about how everyone misunderstood their atrocities
