(9,073 posts)Even if we think he should be gone, we do not say so on the international stage so as to avoid escalating the stakes of the conflict. The last thing we want is more cause for Putin to dig in. What we want to do is allow him an exit, potentially with some light face-saving.
The President's statement does the opposite.
When the Biden administration has been so careful in calibrating our response with our allies, that was a, "No, no, no, no, no, don't say that," moment.

(7,600 posts)it would be "escalatory". Let's face the facts...because Russia is a nuclear power and the threat of regime change just heightens the prospect of a expanding war.

(6,535 posts)about the previous U.S. administration--"for the love of God, this guy cannot remain in power!" but nobody cares when I say things like that, because I am not president of anything. When you command a large military force and say things like that, people feel threatened I guess.

(8,052 posts)elections and politicians. Can't really say you're doing it out loud. The US does not have a policy of regime change in Russia, officially. It's an irresponsible thing to say by a President.
