We got back in the country in December, and haven't even been tempted to turn it back on since then.

(51,308 posts)After that, especially this time of year, Im outside in the garden. Usually listening to audiobooks as I toil away.
I do check in periodically with DU, so I figure Ill find out if anything happens I need to know about. Other than that, just no.

Sorry, feeling especially sarcastic tonight, but seriously
Isnt everything just slightly better? Still cynical AF, but I dont think theres been a single instance where I feel like Ive missed out on whats going on, because I wasnt watching cable news.
That said, full disclosure, I have had BBC News on regularly since the beginning of the Ukraine war, but mostly because I think they have some of the best breaking news coverage. They did a better job reporting live on Jan 6th than NPR ever did. Bit ironic considering NPRs headquartered in DC and BBC is (obviously) London.
But even that is prolly two hours of original content per 24 hours, then repeated clips so as to fill up the day.

(18,993 posts)I use DU as a news aggregator. If I think something is going to get me riled up, I skip it.
I do the same for tech with Hacker News. Tech news is less aggravating but most is irrelevant to my interests.
It used to be "We've got the news to amuse you" but more "We've got the news to abuse you" lately.
I'm too old for that. I try to focus on what's really interesting and doable, so here are my pages for winning in 2022 and Ukraine Relief!!
It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness, except in a gas station.

The biggest GOTV resource page on DU.
I also recommend the Ukraine Humanitarian Relief page.

(7,334 posts)I stopped watching it regularly after 2000. Now I just watch it during election season and on election night, big news events like 1/6, or a really bad fire or weather tragedy.
American news show formats are based on fear and creating anxiety - it is what they do. Not sure how it is today, but Canadian TV news was so refreshing - they based their shows on giving people the facts of the day good deeds included, not scaring them.
I stopped watching mainstream TV in the 1980's - I lived in the Rockies and we could only get one station. I'd go to a bar to watch some sports, used my VCR for movies, and manly listened to music and read books.
I do watch some sports, movies and music shows like American Idol. But never news or sitcoms or dramas. And I zone out on commercials - IMO those are the true evil of TV land. I think I may average about an hour a week over the year.
Anyway good for you for taking the plunge - there are way more less anxiety ridden ways to keep informed about reality on this rock then the fear filled American News Hours.
