Phil Collins And Genesis Bid Farewell To Touring In Final London Show

Genesis won’t turn it on again, staging what was billed as its final concert Saturday night at London’s 02 arena.

Phil Collins, the group’s former drummer, was joined by keyboardist Tony Banks and guitarist Mike Rutherford. Collins, age 71 and increasingly frail with back and hip issues, sat center stage throughout. He was in good humor, though, reportedly quipping at one point that he’ll now need to find a real job after the band’s demise.

Genesis’ “The Last Domino? Tour” came after a 14-year live performance hiatus. It was also postponed during the pandemic. The group’s final tour included concerts in the U.K. last September and in North America last fall, concluding with another 14 concerts in Europe and the U.K.

The trio were joined on the tour by Collins’ son, Nic, who also filled in for his father behind the kit during his recent solo tours. Longtime touring member Daryl Stuermer returned on guitar and bass, joined by Daniel Pearce on backing vocals and percussion and Patrick Smyth on backing vocals and tambourine.

I believe he can still play and record music in studio, but touring is over for him.

They still sounded great, but Phil Collins can barely walk. He can no longer play the drums due to nerve damage, and he sat in a chair the entire show because he can hardly walk anymore. I fear he may not have much longer. From what I've been able to find out, he's only 70 years old, but the damage to his body is much worse because he was a raging alcoholic most of his life. Just glad I was able to see them. I remember a few years back, my wife and I were going to go see Tom Petty and decided we would wait for him to come back around the next time. Then he died. We've been trying not to make that mistake again.

I was devastated.

Unfortunately I missed Genesis last fall when they toured the US.

Another bucket list item unfulfilled.

Sigh.

But at least their music will last for a long long time.

He is looking very old and frail. He's four years older than I am, so I guess people are saying the same about me.

There is a company that provides stage lights for concerts. At the time it was called Varilite and it was located in Dallas, TX. Concert lighting was an integral part of the show with the light movements, color and shape filters and brightness all controlled with computers and choreographed to each set. I was customer support to the engineers who designed the systems for these elaborate sets. Phil was so OCD that he bought the company to have more creative control.

Once the soundtrack was ready and the lights programed Phil would watch a dry run with mannequins on the stage. Once he shut the rehearsal down with, "Where's the red spot!! There's supposed to be a red spotlight there!" He was a hands-on kinda' guy.
