(168 posts)Instead he decided to come to aid of his wife by acting like an ass. Chris Rock was not threatening anyone with a pointy stick, or anything else for that matter. He was a comedian telling jokes. Sometimes jokes sting, perhaps more than they should, but they are still just jokes.
Some people in the world have real fucking problems right fucking now! Will Smith does not have to worry if he will have a roof over his head tomorrow.
At very least tomorrow he might have been a super wealthy guy that was nominated for a very profitable award.
His actions were stupid and disgraceful, and since when did Jada Pinkett Smith become some frail little thing that needs protection?
I hope she kicks her husband's ass when they get home.
Did she really need him to show the world that she married an ass-hat?

At any rate, I really don't care all that much about the problems of the rich and famous when there's a woman down the street who's having her problems with toxic masculinity and nobody's putting her on TV.

(102,205 posts)I have sympathy for those arguing all the several issues involved from all sides, including the reflexive outrage at a joke gone very bad involving his spouse. Still, Chris Rock, like many comedians, is known for pushing the buttons and he likely did not know about Jada's alopecia condition. I can likewise credit him for holding it together as a presenter afterward.
But, yes. How many will think they too can lash out like Will Smith at something with which they strongly disagree voiced by a comedian (or other) onstage?
This one is going to leave a mark...

(11,292 posts)pointing out - one more example of bad behavior being normalized (and in some cases defended and excused).
If it's childish (and classless) when parents get to scuffling and acting like asshats at youth sports events ...
Then it's childish and classless behavior when famous people do it (airing in front of millions) at an awards ceremony ... Agreed?

(19,024 posts)I've read earlier jokes in the show made light of Will and Jada's open marriage, or could have been seen by Will Smith that way. So I think he had his pride hurt before he assaulted Chris Rock.
Regardless, it was a joke, not a good one, and it was a mean one, but it wasn't beyond the pale poor taste or anything. I mean crap, I've had friends go through chemo and lose their hair and we teased them endlessly about it to lighten the mood. That as probably in poor taste too, but they were close friends and this wasn't at a public event.
But Will Smith behaved like a child. He didn't control himself like an adult. It's not OK to commit violence in response to a joke you don't like.

(13,542 posts)An assault charge should be filed. Future Will Smiths need to know that they won't be able to get away with assaulting some performer and their 15 minutes of fame are going to cost them in criminal court.
