(99,708 posts)Chris insulted Will's wife over a medical condition that she finds embarrassing. Will slapped him. I'm sure they both regret it now.

(10,887 posts)Chris Rock attacked her with words. Not cool.
If Will Smith had responded with words, it would have been understandable.
But escalating to physical violence? Nope.

(8,260 posts)I dont know what planet youre living on but here in reality-land, Will Smith has f***ed himself and his career over for a lifetime. Unacceptable behavior. No excuses.

(6,137 posts)But not just one woman, ALL women with this disorder and ALL women undergoing chemotherapy because he said it to audience of tens of millions. This alone is enough to cancel him. Will Smith did what a husband would do to someone who insults his wife but normally in a private setting - punch in a face. Its emotional response not a rational one. The fact that smith cares about his wife more than his career is rare in hollywood. It was stupid display of toxic masculinity as he could take down Chris Rock in a non violent way via cancelling him for the rest of his life. In fact, the punch may have saved Rocks career as they are perceived as even. The coverage is centered around violence on stage not the words said by Rock which are far more hurtful to vulnerable people.

(296,874 posts)horribly wrong and so was Will Smith.
Abd, yes Chris Rock should publicly apologize. I have a feeling he wishes he never would have gone there.

(6,137 posts)The violence was disgusting and the insult to a woman with autoimmune disorder was enough for all networks to permanently ban Chris Rock.

(29,148 posts)She wasn't under attack. The joke was over. If she was upset, then she might have needed support. Going amd punching someone like that isn't help or support. If either her or Will's idea of providing support is assaulting someone else, then that's a pretty sick thing.

(1,737 posts)Thank you so much for this. I've been trying to say this all morning.
that he laughed at first. Then the camera cuts away and all of a sudden hes pissed? Mustve looked around and seen her face and realized shed run right back to their sons friend if he didnt act hard.

(17,255 posts)after "slapping" Chris Rock. If you pause the video, Will is still smiling after the assault. One would think he would look angry after immediately slapping someone in a rage.
Hmm.

(8,684 posts)Not sure I would have been a good little liberal if trump got his mug slapped. Maybe by John McCain. Everyone knows Cruz is a spineless jelly fish.
Both men, Will and Chris crossed the line. I think if Will would have only shouted angrily, keep my wifes name out your fucking mouth, twice as he did, his defense of his wife would have been accomplished.
Both men will feel consequences. Rock should have been aware of her health issue, its very public knowledge. A sad display from both. Punching down comedy is wrong. Punching up retaliation for it, also wrong. Denzel made the point to Will, eloquently. Be careful, at your highest point the devil will enter.

(578 posts)90's watching both of them as a kid and teenager. If you had told my younger self that one day these two iconic figures in their fields would throw hands, I wouldn't believe it. To me it is still surreal.
Both men were in the wrong with their actions. Chris for cracking jokes on Jada's baldness when it comes to illness. Will was wrong for slapping Chris because he committed assault. I have been in many situations where I wanted to slap the shit out of guys, I didn't like but I kept my cool and handled the situation without throwing hands.
Will ultimately was the biggest loser from this fiasco. Chris' joke wasn't funny, and he would have probably had a high chance of getting cancelled since Jada has an illness he was basically making fun of. If Will didn't hit him then we are talking about how much of cruel ass hole Chris was for that jokes. Will bailed him out by hitting him and now Chris comes across as the victim. Will also ruined his moment of winning an Oscar because it will always be overshadowed by what he did to Chris.

Regina Hall insuited Smith with her remark that his wife said she could take and test him for covid. At the time it sounded like an insult of Smith. Maybe it weighed on him. Then the crack about G I Jane 2 pushed him over the edge.
I have my own tasteless assessment that I've not seen elsewhere: Oscars So Black.. But I'm only saying it here, where nobody can hit me.
Another reason I believe it wasn't the alopecia factor. It was perceived as a lack of respect for himself:
"...you've got to be able to have people disrespecting you, and you've got to smile, and you've got to pretend like that's OK...."
Is this part of toxic masculinity? I think it is.

(1,129 posts)GIJane joke was really sexist. It is such a stereotype of the motto happy wife, happy life. Chris Rock would have gotten so much blowback to say if the wife had won, there was no possible way for the husband to win. No, that would be attacking the husbands masculinity. Attacking a mans masculinity is not acceptable. But saying, basically, the wife would be such a bitch, there was no way the husband could win was ok. Then he attacks, um jokes, about Jadas looks. Do I see some sort of pattern here?
I am not talking about the physical attack. Maybe I just never felt Chris Rock was significant enough to listen to, so I had no idea what he was like. Just saying those two jokes back to back says a lot about Chris.

(5,499 posts)I would say his composure kept this from being a full out fight. A joke is a joke. And these celebrities know they are going to get made fun of. There have been worse jokes made over the years.
And Will Smith won't be canceled. He just became more famous than ever. Hollywood has always had a thing for leading men with a violent edge.

(292 posts)That thinks the slap looks fake as hell? I have watched it multiple times and I see no actual contact. And Chris Rock was pretty calm for a guy who got slapped unexpectedly.
True Dough
(17,255 posts)The way Will shouted twice afterwards made me think that maybe it was authentic, even though the slap does look very tame. Given a "free shot," a man the size of Will Smith, who has some pugilistic training, could have stunned Chris Rock into prolonged silence, even with a slap.
What also has me questioning this incident is Will's expression in the seconds after delivering the blow. If you pause the video and watch it in slow motion, Will still has a smile on his face after hitting Chris. That doesn't fit the tone of the moment.
But I'm also baffled as to why the two of them would continue to play along afterwards and not reveal that they had staged the confrontation.
It's bizarre. Maybe Will just showed a modicum of self-restraint when hitting Chris with a rather mild slap?

(3,960 posts)I doubt the incident was planned in advance.
In general, I like Chris Rock. But, I found the joke to be neither funny nor appropriate.
