and that is Vlad "War Criminal" Putin.
The media frenzy over President Biden's remarks is ridiculous.
I do place part of the blame on the White House and State Department, but I am sure they thought that a little "walk back" was warranted and would not become the biggest media frenzy since "I created the internet", or "butter emails".
But, we aren't dealing with the media of Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Morrow, or even Chris Wallace. This is the "gotcha" media. Well, at least it is for Democrats.
The White House could have just called it "locker-room talk".
The State Department could have just said; "Biden was just 'telling it like it is'".
The media could take the approach it did with the Orange Dipshit with a shaved Golden Retrievers ass for a face, and just say; "but he's not a 'typical' politician".
How many farts out of Donnie Dipshits face were excused, or worse, treated like some "genius" strategy above our limited ability to comprehend.
My God! During the entire former defeated guys time in office, I was watching a dog work a Trigonometry problem while half the people and 75% of the media tried to convince me the dog was a genius.
What Joe Biden did was brilliant.
He sent a clear and tough message to Putin. There is only one way forward. After the atrocities committed in Ukraine for all the world to see, Putin's days are numbered. Whether by his own hand, or his people's hand, he's done. Just as we could never have accepted Hitler remaining in control of Germany after the Blitzkrieg, the world will not accept Putin in control of Russia. He shot his load, got out over his skis, or bit off more than he could chew. However you describe it, he's done.
By "walking it back", the White House and State have given our allies the cover to stay in the fight.
It wasn't a "gaff", or a SNAFU, or even a FUBAR.
It was a brilliant geopolitical move to make sure Putin knows that he is finished fucking around.
When, NOT IF, regime change comes to Russia, Biden's speech will be noted as one of the catalysts.

The walk back might have more to do with elected leaders from countries all over the globe saying "wtf?"

We just had a president who said horrible, horrible things to everybody and practically no one stood up to him. Even the media ignored the horror spilling from his weird little mouth.
So, those GOP tools spinning it like it's the end of the world, need to get a grip.

(7,263 posts)Like a brilliant trial lawyer trying to score points with a jury (i.e. World Public Opinion).
He said something very very powerful that absolutely will influence a jurist's mind and stick for long long time.
The opposition (Putin authoritarian supporters) complained to the judge (State Department) and the objection was upheld. (The White House walking it back.)
But the lawyer knew the jury still heard him and nothing was ever going to erase that fact.
He planned the whole maneuver.
He doubled down and scored twice.
Power diplomacy at it's absolute best.
