Not a new thing to have audience members taking offense at some undbridled insults from the stage

...comedians really light into audiences, and there's no guarantee someone won't pop off and hit them.

It's as if people looking on have never seen someone physically take offense to insulting jokes before. It's definitely not a new thing, not in comedy clubs or anywhere else. You can say anything you want to just about anyone, but there's always a chance one of them is going to take offense and possibly strike back physically.

It's wrong on both sides, imo, and both wanton insults and physical reactions should be avoided. But that's not the reality with many humans, and I don't think anyone should expect they can arbitrarily insult someone without consequence, no matter how we feel about violent reactions. It's our own responsibility to avoid provoking people, as much as it is for us to avoid putting our hands on someone or striking out in response.

Smith has it coming for his actions, but Rock should feel some heat, as well. Police and judges make this distinction and judgement all of the time about provoked violence they respond to in their duties. We need to take the same view.

made Will Smith do what he did, but sometimes these attacks only help to ESCALATE.

Smith should have waited until he had the mike , and give Rock a piece of his mind, for all the world to hear.

...but I get physically animated when defending my family and property.

Just all of the worst influences come out of me in those situations.

I think most of us, including Smith, know full well what they 'should' do in those moments. Following through with all of that may be hard for some of us. It just is.

4. "give Rock a piece of his mind, for all the world to hear." That would have been so much better.

Publicly shame him in grace. Yes. I am also bothered by the number of people entertained, embracing public humiliation and insulting an innocent person sitting int eh audience minding her own business. I hear a couple of people holding up Rickles. Even as a very little child and limited entertainment in those days, he always struck me as a nasty human being and never could find the humor in his ugliness.

...and it's primarily a beef between acquaintances in a Hollywood club they both belong to, despite the tawdriness of the public spectacle.

I don't know any Democrats who talk that way.
