Does anyone have any solid proof Chris Rock *KNEW* Jada had a disease?!
I didn't and she looked beautiful and healthy to me
If Rock **KNEW** then the joke was beyond tasteless, I would've been pissed
BUT
NEVER EVER EVER initiate unnecessary violence if you're NOT willing to see it to the end including someone being shot at.
There are WAY to many gun nuts in America for people to tacitly support initiation of stupid violence in the face of JUST tasteless words.

(839 posts)now imagine if kayne west had slapped taylor swift before his beyonce rant. oh ok, that's different probably....
how about if it was not chris rock , but Amy Schumer telling that joke? the scenario could be so different with the multi-verse.

Lol, I can only imagine the difference in reaction.
People have had jokes made about them at awards shows for years. Smith is an immature, insecure bully.

(5,225 posts)Rock did a documentary about black women's hair. So it's highly possible

(9,895 posts)I can't help but feel a little bit like this was a set-up between comedians...riffing on Dave Chappelle's Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood stories skits about Rick James and Eddie and Charlie Murphy.

(26,731 posts)But yes... there is plenty of reason to assume that he knew. He's known the couple for years and she has been quite public about her condition. The fact that you (and I) didn't know really isn't a relevant measure.
Agreed to the rest of your post. It was "beyond tasteless" (to the point that he was "asking for it" ... but that doesn't make the slap ok.

(90,335 posts)... shoulder tendons last month and we're all fairly close!
No, people wont show proof just tacitly justify Smiths dumb assed actions.
FBaggins
(26,731 posts)Some reason you would notice a tendon? Something as obvious as a lack of hair?
Demanding "PROOF" is pretty ridiculous spin. He's known the couple for decades (been in movies with her). The "joke" was tasteless whether he knew or not - but it's far more likely that he knew.

(90,335 posts)... they can justify even tacit support for Smiths stupidity.
I never knew about my cousins condition and I've known her closely all my life.
BlackSkimmer
(51,308 posts)Smith had no right to assault Rock.
Period. End of.

(90,335 posts)... I'm going right at that logic.
People DO NOT understand how violence could escalate in America from something Smith did seeing any person can own a gun.

(9,966 posts)It's an auto-immune condition. And you don't make a crappy joke about another man's wife in front of an audience. You just don't. It's in very poor taste, and bad manners besides. I wish people would stop the pearl clutching. There was no escalation, he didn't hit him with a closed fist or knock him down, and he apologized publicly, OK?
uponit7771
(90,335 posts)... with even a slap COULD NOT escalate into something like a shooting.
PLEASE do the OPPOSITE of what Putrid did in UKR and be ready to take the initiation of ANY violence out to its worst end.
he apologized publicly, OK?
Smith laughed at the joke at first and DID NOT apologize to Rock

(9,073 posts)I hope people are just sitting back and enjoying the unfurling of this sudden justification of toxic masculinity.
Jada isn't her own person. She's Will Smith's wife, so Will Smith needed to commit violence to defend honor.
People hear themselves, right?
Well, this is all highly entertaining.

(9,966 posts)If another man said something mean or ugly about me in public, I'm pretty damn sure my husband would defend me. Not with fists though; he can be exceedingly cutting verbally. And "proprietary"? Well excuuuuuse you!

(115,681 posts)having used them all up on other issues, like wars. I do find it mildly interesting, though, that this morning nobody is talking about anything else wrt the Oscars, not even some of the epically hideous fashion statements for which the event is famous, let alone the name of the obscure feel-good movie nobody has seen because it was only available on Apple's streaming service.
Can we be done with this now?
