When 2 black comedians get into it over a black woman's hair, I am staying right out of that. I do not know how to think.
But I do, however, think it should have been Jada who did the slap. She can take care of herself.

(1,737 posts)What the heck is a "black thing"? OMG. Violence isn't a black thing. The inability to talk things out civilly isn't a black thing. The microaggression of it all.

12. It's a cultural thing, and dependent on history.
My wife's culture is one of Colombia's "cultures of resistance", where nonviolence is a lifestyle.
It hasn't always been that way.
This video documentary features a renowned historian, Francisco Uriel Zuluaga, the world's foremost expert on the history of my wife's culture.

La tozudez y la fiereza con que los guerreros patianos defendieron el estandarte realista, entronizaron al Patía y sus gentes en las categorfas de lo más bárbaro, cruel y salvaje que haya podido darse en la historia de Colombia.

The stubbornness and fierceness with which the warriors from Patía defended the royalist banner, enthroned the Patía and its people in the categories of the most barbaric, cruel and savage that could have occurred in the history of Colombia.

(1,737 posts)Will and Jada Smith are both from this country, no? Are you saying this behavior reflects the black American culture? It's an African/tribal way of life, I suppose. The OP was right about one thing, sometimes it's best to sit things out.
I find this angle extremely insulting. Oh Lord, sometimes DU can be so trying. I guess it's okay for my black a$$ to just go off on people because it's in my African/tribal DNA.
I was at work the other day, I have in faux locs currently and a coworker who is Hispanic commented on how she loves my hair. She then asked permission to touch my hair. I had no issues with it. Another African American friend of mine found it offensive. We aren't monolithic. We are all individuals and should be judged as such. Will Smith acted the way he did because he is Will Smith, not because he's black. The black man Chris Rock could've chosen to defend himself, then we would be entertained to a fistfight, but he chose not to.

(1,737 posts)and false equivalency? You have thoroughly displayed your knowledge of your wife's cultural background. That's commendable. However, this is situation is about Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Chris Rock. Seems like we are going off tangent here.

(1,737 posts)To talk about your wife's culture. Okay. This is getting monotonous and way off tangent. You have turned this sweeping generalization into a lecture on your wife's specific cultural background. The point is lost in the delivery. Are you in agreement with the OP's statement or not?

(21,589 posts)I would guess its extremely hard to take this on. I wanted to post something similar but Im a white woman and didnt quite know where to start on how wrong some of these posts are. Its racist to imply that walking on stage and hitting another human is a black thing.

(1,737 posts)I'm not one to report posters because I believe in giving people a chance to expose themselves. But, to see this thought process here on a Democratic forum is just so sad. Thanks for your comment. Far too many brush these things aside or look the other way.

I agree with you that it's nonsense though. History/culture don't give you an excuse to hit people in any event.
