(3,404 posts)Closest similar charge was when Spirro Agnew (a sitting vice-president) was charged with corruption. His resignation was part of his pleas deal. Elliott Richardson (the Republican AG) knew that with Nixon's own survival uncertain, that he needed to protect the country from the prospect of a President Agnew ascending to the White House.
With the toxic partisanship prevailing, Garland needs ALL of his ducks in a line to blunt the inevitable charges he will face that his prosecution is a witch hunt. Last week we heard GOP apologists rationalizing the Jackson confirmation clown show on Democrats' treatment of Robert Bork 40 years ago. Objective reality no longer has a place in the Republican Party. Their heads will explode when (I sincerely hope) the sedition conspirators are charged.
There will only by ONE chance at justice. Garland is patient...Wanting that chance to count.
