His comment that Putin should not be allowed to remain in power was an expression of his personal outrage after meeting with Ukrainian refugees and their frightened children, NOT a rash ill-considered off-the-cuff "policy change".
The former guy did that sort of crap, not the man who WON the last election.
The press not only repeatedly beat a dead horse, they pounded it flat. "Liberal press", indeed!

(42,737 posts)Some "news" people are trying to get the most mileage out of this non-story as they possibly can and it's making them look ridiculous IMO. It was a perfectly rational statement considering what a horrible creature Putin is and what kind of terror he has released on Ukraine. He lies to his own people and denies them free speech. If unchecked, he will not stop at Ukraine.
