(11,301 posts)The fact that there were 'clarifications' being issued, practically within minutes ... Pretty much speaks for itself.
There are a lot of people who would like to spin this (retroactively) into something else. But the reaction on the day he issued that speech tells the story.
Edit: and apologies for participating in a hijacked thread (the OP is about Smith and Rock)

(7,849 posts)he's unapologetic...Blinken did exactly was he was supposed to do..walked it back with a wink and a nod...it was perfect...btw Biden has no use for Peter Doocy except as a foil..and you didn't hijack anything..the Smith/Rock thing is ridiculous...

(19,199 posts)It's been that way forever. The Cuban Missile Crisis is a good example of that. It has to be done so no one is certain what the other is thinking.

(15,325 posts)They knew where & how to grab the most free & broad headline attention.
They're actors. They know that drama medium better than anyone.
Celebrities stagers use events like major Awards ceremonies or The Met to advertize & elevate their own celebrity brand also.

(15,888 posts)There's a team of writers that come up with most of the jokes and Will Smith does his best Kayne imitation. The best moment on television remark pretty much says it was staged.

(1,296 posts)For a pro comic, having people do weird shit to or around you is money in the bank. Some comedians deliberately get themselves into dicey situations just because they know they'll get material out of it.

I cant help it. Its driven into me, having spent most of my career covering Hollywood in one way or another. If you live in LA it kinda goes with the territory in the news biz anyway. But then I spent years at the AP specifically on the Hollywood beat. So its still kind of a thing for me.
